TDM Team: Required Programs

You all will need to begin using this software at some point, if you don't already:

Xfire-- Post your Xfire ID in a reply to this post so we can all add you. Mine is kraniac.

Teamspeak-- Once you get it, use this to set it up properly. We'll be using TS for practices. If you don't have a microphone headset, you should consider getting one. Wal-Mart has them for about $10. There's no rush in getting one though-- do it at your leisure. And if you absolutely can't get one for some reason, let me know and I'll see if I can fix your problem.

yeah, those programs are EXTREMELY handy. I hang out on xfire and then me and my friends all get on team speak and quickly and painlessly join an online game, it's awesome.

I don't use XFire because I have an old habit (learned in the early days of Doom and Quake) to close all other programs when I run a game.

And I would use a mic if I could buy a good headset, not some cheap one.

I'm willing to take recommendations for good headsets.

Would you consider starting to use Xfire? I had that same habit for a while, but my PC has hyper-threading and I have no noticeable decrease in performance while running Xfire. And I will need to be able to contact all of you individually, on 48 hours notice, because that's how long it takes for a posted ladder match to be eligible for a forfeit win by the challenger. That means that, should we get challenged, I will need to find, within 48 hours, a minimum of two (and preferably three in case of emergency substitution) out of our five people, that can play the match. Xfire will aid me greatly in this. Also, as you probably know, people can tell when you are playing UT without having to start up the game, which is a convenient feature.

I took a looksee at XFire and from what I can tell it is still pretty lacking in important features:

-No ability to block users (hello spam)
-No file transfer
-etc...

You can always reach me within 48 hours simply by e-mailing me, or getting me on YIM.

Until XFire matures, I really have no incentive to use it, especially since it only takes me a few seconds to load UT2K4 and look at my buddy list.

I did however sign up for TeamWarefare... Haven' received the confirmation e-mail yet.

You don't need to block users. The only people, by default, who see that you are online, and can message you, are your friends and your friends of friends playing a game. You can set it even stricter, to friends only. I've been using it since May with no problems whatsoever with spam.

You have a point there, but I don't find file transfer all that useful anyway. MSN Messenger had it when I used that a while back, but I could never get it to work. Probably issues with my hardware firewall in my router. Of course, that is just my opinion.

That's good, but then you can only see who's on an actual server, not who's just got the game running, looking for a server to join. And if you want to talk to them, you'll have to join the server they're occupying. If the server is full, you'll have to spectate. If the server doesn't have spectator slots, or if the ones it has are full, you'll be out of luck.

Anyway, if you're quite sure you don't want to use it, I won't force the issue, but it will make it more difficult to reach you.

Oh, and there won't be practice this Friday, the 7th of January. I've come down with a cold and I'll be on vacation from the 8th to the 16th. That means no practice the 14th either. If Shagz wants to make a challenge on the ladder in the meantime, though, he can do it, as he has administrative power over the team. He'll have to be the one organizing it and finding available team members, though. I won't have any internet access whatsoever until I return.

Well, I read the tech support forums on XFire and I saw people complaining about spam and not being able to block users, so that's pretty much all I needed to see.

I may give it a shot, but can't promise anything. Again, e-mail is always the best way to reach me. I check it several times per day so the 48 hours isn't really an issue.

I still haven't received any confirmation e-mail from TeamWarfare. Is that normal? It's been several hours now...

Wow! Those seem very nice, and I can buy them off Amazon.com for $21.  Thanks a lot!

Don't know about TWL not responding. I got mine nearly instantaneously. Perhaps your spam filter blocked it? Maybe ask them about it.

What about a demo recording of the matches when you all have one. I would like to see my fellow ToJ'rs in action. Any spectators allowed when you have a match or does that interfere with the ping of the players. CS

After reading the rules, I see that it says "No spectators unless both teams agree".

I understand this, because I used to play in tournaments for Quake II, and clans could have their fellow clansmen spectate the enemy team and give away their locations on Roger Wilco.

But hey, the other team *might* agree....

Now demo recording is perfectly okay, and actually encouraged, because if (or should I say when) we pound the other teams into a pasty dough, we need demos to prove that we actually won if the other teams accuse us of cheating or something. And I wouldn't put it past them to stoop that low... Especially some of the anti-Christian teams I see on the list.

That's a little hope. If I get to spectate they may want one of their own to spectate. I know I wouldn't use any type of talk program to aid our members (cheat) but they might so

Hey Kraniac I guess I might need a password and I'll get signed up in the ladder. I might get a broadband hookup someday. lol, CS

I'll give you the password when you get broadband. There's an obscure rule that only four members are allowed on a 2v2 team. It has never been enforced and many teams are in violation of that rule, including us once everyone signs up (we have five). I very much doubt that they would call us on it but just the same, I don't want to add members to our TWL roster that aren't immediately available. However, in the event you get broadband, I would not hesitate to add you.

Hi hi. I haven't forgotten about playing as a backup for the team. I've just been a bit of slacker since getting back to St. Louis and installing Half-Life 2. ^^;;

Okay. I saw that XFire is listed as a required program. Unfortunately, XFire, last I checked, conflicts with Covenant Eyes, an Internet accountability program I have running on all my PCs. I can e-mail the XFire developers and see if they've fixed this problem, but I doubt it since it affects so few users.

Also, what time will the TDM matches be held? I'm getting ready to switch to evening classes so I can work and pay bills this semester, so I don't know if I'd be able to make the matches now. ;_; If the matches and practices don't conflict with my schedule, though, I'd love to still be listed as a backup.

Kraniac was heading up scheduling, I'll let him answer that question when he gets back from vacation, but last I heard Fri nights seemed to be the preferred deal.

No problem Tek. CE definitely takes priority.

It seems that in my absence TWL has decided to start enforcing the max 4 players rule, which means that you won't be able to be listed as a backup anymore. If we have more interested persons than we have right now, I think I'll put them on a kind of waiting list, and once we have four people on the waiting list, we can switch to 4v4 TDM.

Matches are scheduled individually, and practices are Fridays at 7 PM EST, at irregular intervals. I announce when we have them on these forums.

Oh, and I hope to be able to procure server-side demos for all our matches, but we'll see how that goes.
