A topic concerning the matter of TRUE conciounce. * CANNOT SPELL

How can non-living matter possibly slowly move-up (assuming your viewpoint or whatever) to the point where it can contemplate the existence of itself.

basically, how does non-living matter come to think about ITSELF. Matter thinking about matter.

What do you mean humans. Although we did come from non-living matter, dust, God created us. We did not create ourselfs.

Question Confused

SA, do you believe that man evolved? If so, then you question is "how did we get from brainless bacteria to philosophical humans." The answer would then be "we did not, and it cannot happen." Conscience (thats how to spell is SA, con=with science=knowledge) is proof that we were created to have a spiritual side and physical... a moral law and physical laws.

This is an argument from ignorance. Not knowing an explanation does not mean an explanation is impossible. And since we are barely beginning to understand what consciousness is, it is not surprising that we would not have its origin worked out yet.

Something that likely contributes to the claim of consciousness's inexplicability is the fact that many people do not want a naturalistic explanation of consciousness, since a natural consciousness does not fit easily with a divine soul. This threatens people's desire for a divine origin and immortality. An examination of this point alone could fill several threads though. However.

1. There is much evidence -- from genetic predispositions of behavior and personality, from brain injury studies, from brain imaging of healthy people -- that consciousness is naturalistic now. A natural origin would not matter much beyond that.
2. What we want has no bearing on what really is.

By the way, sorry if it seems like I'm picking on you Jericho_Falls. I addressed this to the thread in general, not to anyone in particular.

It's kind of like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (the book not the movie). Well, anyways in the book scientists builld a BIG computer so they can figure out the answer to life, the universe and everything. This computer is unable to do it, but it gives them the plans to build an even BIGGER computer. The BIGGER computer then takes 1,000,000 years, (can't remember exactly), to figure out the answer. The answer turns out to be...42. The scientists don't understand the answer but the computer tells them that before they will be able to understand it they must first figure out the questions. The BIGGER computer then gives them moe plans for a BIGGEST computer but the scientists are lynched because of the people don't understand the answer.

(Or something like that)

I really need to watch the movie. Or read the book. Or both. I'm such a troglodyte
