I am not praying
that You take them out of the world
but that You protect them from the evil one.
John 17:15, HCSB

People have a strong tendency to gravitate toward people that look similar, act similarly, and believe the same way. That tendency, already very powerful, is often greatly exaggerated online.

Let us remember that Christ did not intend to take us out of the world, but rather He prayed for our protection from the evil one. That means that have no mandate to seal ourselves away from the world, though we should exercise discernment when choosing what we watch and listen to and who we spend our times with. Do our activities and our relationships seek to glorify God and advance His plans?

Yes, this is, in my opinion, a clear directive against monasticism, but that's a topic for another (and likely much longer thread). :)

My intention here is to remind us--myself included--that we are not called, as it is so often phrased, to be in the world but not of the world, influencing those who don't yet believe in Christ but living out of different motives and energized by a different source.
