Summer Vacation

Well after a week away I am home and, unfortunately, back at work. My family and I had a great time this last week, even without an internet connection. :p

Now that summer vacation is pretty much done for most of us, I thought it would be nice to start a thread where people could share a few highlights and fond memories from the summer. If anyone else wants to add their vacation memories (or any other highlights), pleae feel free.

Here's some from my trip:

For our trip, we drove down to Branson, MO for a week's stay. On the way we stopped in St. Louis for a ride in the bubble pods to the top of the gateway arch.

In Branson, we did a lot of different things. For those of you who are unfamilliar with Branson, it is a major tourist spot. One person there described it as Las Vegas without the Casinos, meaning lots of attractions and shows. The theme park behind our hotel had a fireworks show almost every night viewable from the landing outside our room. My kids would likely have been content just spending the entire week at the pools. Other than one nerve wracking moment fishing our 3-year old out after he jumped into the 5ft deep end of the pool without his swimmies, I'd agree that these were some of the most relaxing times during the trip.

We saw 2 shows while in Branson. The first was "Hot Seat" which was a improv comedy team. The other was Kirby VanBurch. Kirby (with his wife Bambi) is a magician. From what I understand, Kirby is an internationally known magician who performed in Las Vegas for a while, but moved to Branson for a more family friendly environment. It was a great show and my family and I enjoyed it a lot. Before the show, I thought it was interesting that the brochures for his show have a small fish logo on them. He concluded the show not only pointing out that there is no magic and that everything he did was an ILLUSION, but then took out a piece of string and while breaking it into pieces explained that even if your life felt broken that Christ could make you feel whole again. As he was concluding this story he took the broken pieces of string, tied them together and then revealed a single, unbroken piece of string.

On the way home, we made one final stop in Lafayette, IN to visit and worship with the church that my wife and I had joined just after we were married. It was great to see all those old friends once again as well as introduce our childeren to that part of our lives as well as other landmarks from that stage of our life.

Well, we didn't really take a summer vacation-yet. We are going to Dragon*Con this weekend and a star party* in Tennessee next month! Yep, we're geeks...

Glad you had fun, Derk!

*A star party is an astronomy thing, with lots and lots and lots of people with their telescopes set up. Fun and weird-looking...all the light sources are red!

So this summer was a fun one for me, mostly what i did was work and hang out with my friends on the lake. Every month my family went to an INT tournament(waterskiing, kneeboarding, wakeboarding and wakeskateing touranment), we were in the Kansas league and I got first place at state in my division and am qualified to go to nationals. Qualifed last year too but cost to much, same thing this year costly b/c of ticket all the way out to California not to mention missing school.

Few weeks ago went to visit my G-ma and G-pa, hadnt seen them in almost a year, so was nice to see them. Also there is a praise on that part because my Grandma had a heart attack like in march and couldnt talk, but she is doing good now and almost fully recovered.

Over this summer this guild has kept me busy and helped me keep my focus on God. I just wanted to say that this guild is awesome and the people that lead and make up our guild are GREAT! What this guild has taught me this summer i am greatful for and honored to be able to say that i am apart of SoE/SOE. Thanks guys for being there and being such good friends.

Awesome. Sounds like you guys had a good time Derk. I'd love to go to Branson some time. It sounds like fun. I've been to KC a couple of times when my Astros were playing the Royals (yay for interleague play). And I've been to Worlds of Fun but I never made it down to Branson. Now that I'm moving to San Antonio, that ship has probably sailed. There's tons of new experiences to be had in the SA area though. :D

Awesome, DZWart. I live in St. Louis, although I have never been to Branson. Next time you come through, send me a note, I'll buy you a cup of coffee or a Mountain Dew :)

My summer vacation was the best I've ever had. I saved and was able to take a two week study tour of Israel, through a great Bible study ministry, Precept If you ever get the chance, it's soooooo worth it. It made the Bible come alive, to walk in the Garden, sail on the Sea of Galilee, stand in Ampitheater where Paul made his defence before Felix (Acts 18), float in the Dead Sea, etc. But also to talk to the people, hear Hebrew spoken, taste the Food (kosher of course).

And stand on the Temple Mount in the City of David ......
