It is a significant improvement over the old UI, both in terms of aesthetics and usability.
Probably the best practical improvement is how it shows which of my Steam friends owns the game I selected on my list, including their online status. Makes it easier to get a group together for L4D2, for example.
The In-Game Overlay is also more snazzy and displays more community information.
My gripe so far is that the Friends menu is on the main Steam window instead of the Friends window like in the old UI.

I don't like it, it looks worse graphically and it's clunky and harder to navigate, don't fix what ain't broke...

After spending some more time using the beta, I said. Though there are still some things I think they could have done better, it is overall an improvement over the last version.
