State of the Mage?

In the four months that I was away from WoW, I didn't really keep up with changes in the game. I was wondering if someone could tell me what may have changed with the mage, or point me to a site listing any changes.

Thanks!

The biggest changes are arguably coming up in the next patch - your mana emerald will be usable 3x ...and you can train Ice Block rather than require a talent point for it.

Other notable changes: the damage tax for picking Imp Fireball / Frostbolt has been removed...so no more reduction in damage paralleling the reduction in casting time.

Sounds like all good news to me. :)

Someone did mention to me that mages now have a party food/drink spell, and that Evocation regen is now based on total mana or int, rather than boosting regen from Spirit.

The party TABLE!!!!!

Costs a couple reagents, its self serving and has 50 charges. Which means everybody in a 25 man raid and get two full stacks of food from it!!! Best change ever. Invite mage, get table, use table, kick mage, invite uber leet shadowpriest. LOL, j\k but the table is awesome. And the food is health \ mana combined.

the table is only trainable at 70 after you get both the food & water books. Reduced mana cost for buffs, improved the evocate, reduced the penalty on improved spells.

That's the big changes. And NattyG is right. That 3 uses from 1 mana gem is going to be nice (but it still has a 2min cooldown between uses).

Oh, and WB.

mages got nothing but buffs lately, but we still stink in PVP...but trainable IB might help that a bit...we'll find out. =D

IB will help remove debuffs, but we're still going to get shredded under concentrated attack - but that's how mages are.

I can't remember: does Ice Block reduce or remove threat, temporarily or permanently?

temp reduction. At the end of the IB, your threat is restored to it's original numerical value. You just have to hope the tank has surpassed you by then.

it's a 5-second progressive, reducing your threat by 20% at the end of each second... including the first tick. If the mob is already on you, your invis won't help unless you can slow the mob. Casting any other spell or using any other ability breaks it. So you'd have to frost nova or blink, then invis to dump agro.

*nod*

Typically I would use Invis during boss fights when my threat began to get close to the tank's, thereby giving me that much more room to do damage.

I was thinking about Evocation today and had a thought. Before the change from boosting regen to restoring a percent of total mana, I would have a high-Spirit staff with Spirit enchant and a high spirit wand that I would swap to for evocating. I found that this probably gave me 40% or so more mana back.

Now that Evocation restores 60% of your total mana, I imagine that switching to a high Intellect staff with Intellect enchant and a high Intellect wand for Evocation would have a similar effect. By extention, having points in Arcane Mind or being a gnome would also help restore more of your mana.

You could probably macro something to that effect pretty easily...I forget which slots they are, (I seem to remember 15-17 being the weapon slots, with 18 being ammo) but you could even specify that in the case of having an OH weapon you want to equip in your MH.
