Starz play leaves Netflix (or assorted Gerbil rant on shallow people)

To those of you not in the know Starz licenses some content to Netflix. As of the February 29th that contact expires. Unfortunately Starz was responsible for a decent amount of the good old movies (not all) my family watches so I've gotten the shaft. It's a bit disheartening to see comments like the below on the net but they should communicate my perception of Starz leaving Netflix and more so my perception of the world...

My father is adamant about how “starz” has the most movies…..and subscribes to it. He doesn’t get Showtime, HBO, or anything else anymore because he thinks “Starz” is the best…honestly I am sure it’s because they are the only one that constantly plays his TERRIBLE old movies that he insists on watching.

I’m bitter…if you couldn’t tell. Because of him I can’t visit their house to watch Weeds….(I won’t pay for cable, I just want to freeload!)

American Dad is worth the Neflix subscription alone…

Ho, ho, ho shoot me now. The hole I crawl into to get away from these "special" people is going to get a little bit smaller come the 29th -_- .

Bottom line if you wanted to watch a specific old movie/program check now as many are going off. As a suggestion here is a simple character based show with excellent morals (Gene Roddenberry wrote some of them BTW). I like it very much but it expires on the 29th so watch a few while you can. So few shows just feel "right" like it does. It has a lot of great guest stars too. Young people it won't hurt you and you only have to repress the "ew it's not in color" reflex for 30 minutes.

It's is not a matter of my opinion but overwhelming fact that modern media is a lot more vulgar and no better written than media past. I've watched scores upon scores of old programing to compare to new, I know trust me. While not perfect older media is so much more moral and cleaner overall. For example the Macfarline shows are plagiaristic of older things, blatantly indoctrinatingly liberal and always vulgar (not to mention his Fox shows are the same sit-com family formula regurgitated >.<) . Yet people like the above commentators will not even watch the old shows Macfarline's steal from, can you say shallow?

I know not everything old is good but they have been time tested. New things have had no such tests so you get whatever fad studios decide to spew out chucked full of modern immorality. This is why articles like the recently linked to one on Mass Effect are laughable. Come back in 20 years and then tell me it was groundbreaking (because it's not /will restrain self here as I did on the Mass Effect thread). Also I frequently find nonsensical plots in both old and new media so don't tell me writers are any better today. Dialogue is however vastly superior in older films. Actors and writers came from stage, vaudeville, and radio backgrounds back then which stressed what you said much more than what you did. Today's special effects and action sequences are better, I'll give modern media that, but that's all. So the choice comes down to do you want to have immoral sparkly shallowness or moral meaningful thought.

Heh, I'm still working on getting my wife to watch older stuff. I think it has a lot to do with how you are brought up. I was the only one of my group of friends who was exposed to older movies and shows when I was young. I am still their only advocate in my group to this day.

Sigh I know the feeling. It's not like everything old is automatically good but just because something is old doesn't make it bad. People are missing so many wonderful movies and shows preferring to watch tripe! It's like future generations are being trained to be bigots and won't even recognize it within themselves. I blame politically correct secular media. I'd expect it from secular people but I'd have thought Christians would look at entertainment from a more moral perspective. Then older programing wins out big time. It's not just about supporting sin or temptation, for me to enjoy something it has to be both entertaining and not force me to continually ignore immorality. It's like every time I hear God or Jesus used in vain I feel someone I love has been insulted, that's not fun. Don't get me started on the warped overarching morals plots have today either (insert eye roll). I do put up with new stuff some but one gets tired of it. A viewer should want the protagonist to win not wish he would take a flying leap off a cliff. I used to think all Christians were that way, guess not. Makes me wonder why I bother admin-ing against language if everyone is so willing to put up with it rather than even try anything else.

Morality aside many older things are just flat better written and better acted.

I think, to some degree, this is because the majority of old stuff that has survived is still around because it was good. I have seen some terrible acting and dialog in older movies. But I believe the majority of the garbage that was produced has passed into history while the real gems are still around. It makes it much easier to find good older movies.

Nods :) , that's exactly what I meant by time tested. Unfortunately it also seems some good stuff gets buried as companies licensing content are passing over paying for lesser heard of films for another vampire soap opera or reality series that was just on TV. Most people should have just seen these shows is it really worth the money? Do people really re-watch something they just saw that much?

I really need to update my old movie thread more often. We watch way stuff every day so I've got a lot a could add. I've also got mention to some of the good OTR (old time radio) on the internet one of these days. We used to listen to a ton of it back when but have literary used up all the available shows we could find. Very convenient if you have to be doing work but can still listen. It's a bit of a mire if you get into what is and isn't still under copyright though.

Even some of the silents are tremendous films. Some of the silent actors were ten times the actor than some of the highly acclaimed ones of today. I have found some of the movies my other half and I really love on Netflix. Then there are some I like that she doesn't, like Night of the Hunter with a young Shelley Winter and Robert Mitchum at his creepyist. The only thing I have against Netflix is a lack of some of the really old TV shows, like Topper and The Millionaire. But I have a Roku player so I guess if the desire for the good old TV shows gets too great I can always subscribe to Hulu plus for the Roku. Mr. Ed anyone?

May want to try Archive.org for a few very old things. It's about as intuitive as if someone had shoved all their old junk good and bad into a box, then dumped some hippy culture stuff on top of it and you have to dig through it. Has some good gems but hard to find them sometimes.

Edit: Here is a heartwarmer we watched the other day to get you started.

Little Lord Fauntleroy

Honestly why did this story become known for Fauntleroy being a pansy? Other than his mother dressing him he's like the nicest kid ever and is more than willing to fight when required. Maybe the book is different. Though it seems like the way people malign Uncle Toms Cabin because the black CHRISTIAN cared more about his master's soul than his life. Then you get black people saying "I ain't no Uncle Tom". I'd be honored to be called an Uncle Tom. Really need to finish reading that book one day it was good (not a masterpiece but enjoyable) but I got away from it.

(only read first post)

I can see where you are coming from, but 99% of my Netflix sub is used by my kids for shows like Dora, Diego, and many other kid shows. I watch Mythbusters, How It's Made, and good stuffs like that. So the whole stars thing doesn't effect me much. But I understand where your coming from.

You may want to look into Amazon Prime Instant Video, their selection is getting very large, and only like $79/year. And many devices support it now.

Thanks Xion if things do get worse we may change subs if we find something better. For now there is still stuff on Netflix for us to watch. I think it's just bad for the world to have people so unjustly enamored with "new".

Actually I have watched "How It's Made". It is interesting but it always leaves us wanting more in depth info.

It's getting to the point where you have to subscribe to so many services to get everything you want that you might as well have satellite...

Which reminds me that I heard that Netflix stock went down this past week on the announcement that Comcast is getting into the streaming business and rumors that DirectTV will be doing the same.

I think competition is good thing, but it may be a bumpy ride until the dust settles.

Currently use in diminishing order Netflix (for almost everything) with free Hulu and Archive.org occasion.

While Netflix's available movies have been reduced, with Netflix splitting it's disc service off and now Starz leaving, we aren't really in the market to change quite yet. It is interesting to see what else is out there though it would have to be as cheap and offer more old movies. We pretty much only want old stuff. The amount of new movies we actually want to watch can easily be covered by 3 or 4 1 dollar Red Box rentals a year.

Googled Roku. If I understand correctly it's a player that connects to your TV and links any services, Netflix, etc. to it. They also have some movies on their own correct?

Not sure about movies on their own. But links a large number of free and pay channels including things like Pandora, News Services, Weather, Crackle, Hulu Plus, Sports, Disney, way too many things to list here. If you have Wi Fi at home the set up takes less than 10 mins. If you go hard wired, it depends on how long it takes to string Cat 5(or 6) cable. Customer service is pretty good too, I had my Roku about 5 months when the wall wart fried, no hassles, just a 5 min call to get an RMA number. Ship it back, and replacement in about 2 weeks. Most of that time was waiting on USPS. Cheapest cable TV replacement that I know of.

I'm seriously going to check Roku out. I read it needs faster internet then I currently have.. although I can supposedly get a plan that gives me a turbo speed from roadrunner. I'll check it out.

Thanks!

If Hulu Plus removed their ads (which I understand they won't), I would kick Netflix to the curb in a heartbeat.

I'm currently using a free 1-month trial of Hulu Plus and trying to finish Xam'd (and hope to start and finish one or two other anime series as well) before the end of the trial, then cancel. Paid services with ads? No thank you.

But nearly all (if not all) anime on Netflix is dubbed, which, for me and not necessarily for anyone else, makes it unwatchable.

EDIT: My wife and I don't watch enough TV to warrant the ludicrous prices cable and satellite companies charge, but if Amazon's streaming service includes Prime shipping, well, I may be jumping ship from Netflix to Amazon sooner rather than later.

EDIT#2: Amazon Prime does indeed include Amazon's streaming service. Time to re-evaluate my Netflix subscription.

Seen it, meh, forgot most of it.

Come on Tek you got to tell me you at least watch at least a few old movies sometimes right? Gerbil looks all dewy eyed T_T.

I have had the Roku 1 for years and LOVE it. You can get tons of "channels" including Crackle, Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon. We primarily use it for Netflix, but we occasionally use the Pandora and Crackle channels.

Both my parents and my mother-in-law picked up the Rocku 2 recently and I know my mom loves it.
