StarCraft II 1.0 (Beta) - First Impressions

Bowser

Tribe of Judah StarCraft Series Chapter Leader
Hello.

I've been observing Streams and Youtubes of StarCraft II's closed beta since its distribution on Wednesday. I've watched somewhere between 18-20 hours of gameplay since then and have observed many different players from several different communities, including JessicaJung, Lumi, YellowSnow, and Cecil from 'StarCraft Method', as well as many different players from Team Liquid, 1UP network, and Giant Bomb. I would like to share with you some of my observations for the purpose of sharing information to those who are new, and also to get the feedback of experienced players and knowledgable followers and fans.
Below are some of my observations of the game. Not all of them are entirely based on my opinion, but rather something I overheard during a chat.

StarCraft II 1.0 (Beta) - First Impressions

Pros:
• Terrain looks good
• Unit pathing is really superb
• Units look to be powerful and are upgradeable
• Vastly different strategies in 1vs1 vs 2vs2
• Music is fantastic
• Terrain editor is very powerful, although may be difficult to use
• Matches are quick to find
• The ladder setup looks fantastic
-> although the points system will probably need to be tweaked quite a bit
• B.net is it's own pro
-> B.net interface looks awesome
• It appears that StarCraft will play on very basic systems. people are playing the game with even less than the system requirements and say the game is running fine (albeit on very low settings)
• Many new units replace old ones, or old units were merged and created into one new one.
• People have said how eerily similar this is to the original game. -]They say the sounds, buildings, terrain, pathing, and scouting feel very true to the original. The difference lies in strategy and build
• structure/macro (but I suspect even the macro is largely similar)
• New chat features are extremely useful
• Finding teams, groups among friends is easier than ever
• Many cases of large, epic-scale battles as well as smaller, more micro intensive fights, sometimes during the same match.
• Blizzard's humor is pretty evident throughout the game via unit speech
• The different races maintain their individuality/uniqueness, and perhaps have even become more distinct. One example is that the Terrans sound more hick than ever, and the Protoss have gained a "dark side".
• The new units for the most part seem impressive. Roaches, banelings, Marauders, Vikings, Void Ray, etc.

Iffy:
• Unit Sounds/ Speech extremely redundant and annoying
• Vespense Gas takes on a drastically different role in the game and is required for even basic structures/units. Also, you mine very very little of it at a time, even with 3-4 extractors.
• New units - 'Terrain jumpers" able to traverse terrain that previously only air units could cross. they are able to jump into the back of a players base and do damage, surprise attack. Can traverse cliffs,
• but appears to only be able to cross elevation differences, not distances e.g. can't drop across rivers or short distances like on space platforms (colossus, reapers, and stalkers to some extent)
• The voice chat feature in-game looks very sweet and *seems* to have good quality, superior to WoW's VOIP.
• It's too early for me to say if the game is well-balanced, we'll have to wait and see. Some units/strategies just seem "too powerful", like completely destroying the CC just minutes into the game.
• The new maps look good, but it's difficult to gauge this early on. If Blizzard sponsors an event where fans can create maps to be used in ladders then I think it will be as successful, if not more so, than
• when they did the same thing for Warcraft III.
• Addons to Terran buildings seem to limit gameplay, but it's a bit too early to critique

Cons:
• Building art looks cheap. Zerg structures look shiny and plasticky, while Terran looks like very basic modelling; not much texture. Protoss buildings looks good.
• If you don't stay on your game, you can get steamrolled the your opponent very easily
• Most of the streams I've watched the players rarely advance past tier 2. Most units produced for all races stay in the tier 1-2 range. I think this is a major drawback to decisions the player has to make and limits gameplay.
• In many of the matches I watched the players only chose a few units to fight with. So massive fights ultimately only consisted of 2 maybe 3 different types of units, even among 2v2s.
• Competitive multiplayer is extremely daunting to a beginner, and even to a novice
• Race-specific interfaces look unimpressive.
-> (However, the interface's functionality is very intuitive and "out-of-the-way" of the battles, movement, and economics of the game)

• Music is fantastic

Its weird and different.

Hearing the Terran music, a few are remixes from the Original.

1 of them has a Texan theme.

The Patrol feature is pretty cool.

Also, the unit's special like Roaches regeneration rate and Reapers bomb throwing are cool and noticable.

The Tech Tree, however, is different.

You can easily get Ghosts and Nukes quite quickly before anyone researches Detectors. (Except for Scanner Sweep)

I was looking through Zerg units and notice something was missing.

Then I looked a Scrapped Units and unfortunately, Lurkers are removed!

How newbie friendly is it?

It looks like newbs will be able to play the game with no problem. From what I can see, the tooltips for actions and such are informative enough to educate the player, if they just take the time out to look at them.

I can't speak for the Singleplayer, because that's not being tested right now (no one has seen it), but I suspect it will be very newb supportive.

Well, listening to the Terran Theme Music, its not bad.

As one guy put it, "Mix of Western and Techno."

Others are a mix of Hard and Smooth Rock.

I got into the Beta sometime this week, never got an email so if I were you guys I'd log into battle.net and check if it shows starcraft 2. I haven't got to play but a few comp games will give some feedback when I can play.

I logged in to battle.net just now in the vain hope that I would have access to the StarCraft II beta, but, alas, no beta for me.

:(

This game is amazing. Won my first two games in a row vs other players. The match up system seems quite good. Find a game within seconds and seems to be pretty even skilled players.

Protoss feels a little over powered. Void rays seem to slaughter and a mix of zealots and stalkers protect you till you get there. In my second game I held this guy off with my zealots and managed to take out his expansion and had to pull back. He was moving back towards my base when I snuck in 6 void rays and destroyed his nexus in about ten seconds game over.

That's pretty amazing if you can make an assessment about the game's balance from only two games. IMO this beta is more balanced than just about any other RTS at release. It's way more balanced than Starcraft 1.00, and probably even more balanced than 1.05. I've only played about 100 games of 1v1 though, and I'd need about 500 or so before I can make a reasonable judgment. Void rays are pretty easily countered, and if you're not using sentries in your ground force, I guarantee you'll get slaughtered by a competent opponent. Force field and guardian shield are super strong.

Probably the only unit that really needs nerfing right now is the banshee, which is a bit too strong. But, still, even if it's overpowered, it's not even close to being broken. Maybe burrowed banelings punish people too much for not bringing along detection on a push, which a zerg should have the ability to punish, but it's maybe a bit too strong, so I'd consider changing that mechanic. It's basically like the "hold lurker" trick/bug except completely intentional (fwiw, hold lurker is banned in most competitive play because it can pretty much end the game).

The game plays incredibly fast, though, and for a ~100apm player like me, I don't expect to be able to stay competitive for very long. It's going to take an incredible amount of speed to play this game well. Unlike Brood Wars, where it was possible to stay somewhat competitive with about 100-150 apm for a couple of years, this game is mechanically more demanding and the talented players are going to separate themselves from the rest very quickly. Also, all of the concerns I had about the game being in 3D have been pretty much settled. It's much crisper than I expected, and after about ~10 games it's pretty easy to tell what's going on in the heat of battle.

As I said from my limited play time they feel a little over powered. With 6 unupgraded Void Rays I was taking out packs of 20 Hydras which seem like should be an obvious counter. Also 4 Void Rays easily dispatched six mutas and I wasn't really doing any micro or anything just watching the battle play out. They also easily dispatch ground defense such as turrents or spore colonies.

I haven't played terran yet maybe the Banshee is a bit strong but I'm not any expert player by any means haven't done any unit research just played a lot of the first game and I've won my first 5 games a in row so far with Toss.

The guy with the 20 hydras is doing something wrong if he's losing to 6 void rays.

Void Rays out-range the Hydralisks.

But I'd say he Hold Position or Burrow his troops and didn't realize the, "Our Forces are Under Attack."

Exo and Kralgon, would you mind streaming your games if you aren't already? I have a stream channel set up if you want to use it.

I might be able to do that though my play time is going to be pretty random and sporadic. I managed to get through the initial ten games and got ranked now. I'm in the Gold league after going 7-3.

Protoss doesn’t feel as crazy after a few games though Void Reavers do still feel cheap. If someone isn’t watching or you split up a ground attack and send them in behind the base you can end a game really easily. They are glass cannons taken to an extreme and if given a few seconds will decimate a structure.

I did get destroyed by a skilled Terran player though he didn’t use any banshees. He had an unbelievable amount of marines and setup siege tanks where they could hit me from outside my base. My ground units couldn’t get through the line of tanks and his marines mopped up my air.

I am in the Beta now... it is really like the first one with new features...

There are cool features they added but 1v1 and 2v2 are the same as they use to be... either turtle shell or fast attack...
