STA Match [FDG] v [42]

Man we got beat like a drum last night on ctf_impact2. Clan Hitchhiker [42] is VERY good. Final score (2 rounds) [42] = 12, [FDG] = 0. Here's their general strat:

They ran 2 Engies on D, and then everyone else played both ways. They controlled the middle area of the map with 2 medics, 2 demos, a heavy, and a solly. They waited there and built up uber, and also came back to help on D if we came through their side door. That's why there always was more of them than us. We played 4 O and they basically had all 8 on D. They waited until they build up uber and killed 3-4 of us and then pushed in. Demos piped the doors to spawn, the heavy broke the glass to the intel, and they all went back out as a team.

Lessons learned (IMO)

1. We need a good demoman. I'm gonna practice playing demoman a lot here the next few weeks and see if I can make myself better.
2. We need to move better as a group. If you don't and you play against a team who does, you'll get rolled every time. I don't care how good you are singly, you can't take out 6-8 enemies at once.
3. We need to think less about "these people are on O, these people are on D" and more about "everyone help play D, we'll control a central point on the map and build up ubers while keeping the other team from getting a free run into our base, we can come back and help on D if they get past us, and we can rush their base as an entire team with ubers charged after we've killed 3-4 of them trying to cap our intel"

I need to get around to writing some TF 2 tips but I agree with everything you said and will add my 2 bits.

1. We need a good demoman. I'm gonna practice playing demoman a lot here the next few weeks and see if I can make myself better.

The valve commentary notes the demoman as being the most versatile class and it is quite true. I've found the hardest yet most useful tactic is simply being able to score direct hits with the primary weapon rather than relying on the secondary all the time so I'd suggest practicing that. Yes stickies are easier and more powerful to use but if you can be good with the primary you can leave the stickies out for another occasion. The "shoot the sticky on the ground in front of you, then run over it and detonate it as a pursuer follows you (without looking back)" is also a useful technique I'd suggest practicing (I can't do it worth anything but it's sure useful).

2. We need to move better as a group. If you don't and you play against a team who does, you'll get rolled every time. I don't care how good you are singly, you can't take out 6-8 enemies at once.

Yup its not called "team" fortress for nothing coordinated attacks are positively more deadly. Even spies who are the most solo of the classes greatly benefit from coordinating attacks from behind enemies with other team members frontal ones (it makes sentry killing so very easy to have it sapped just as it's being shot).

In the game you have defense and then you have offense/defense there is really no pure offense in the game. Also there are many times when you should not wait for ubers as continually applying direct pressure has the effect of breaking the other teams coordination. I've seen many teams who were attacking together and doing great fall apart and start doing badly because player A is waiting for respawn while player B is still alive trying to defend. That means player A will have to hunt down player B to get re-coordinated and if you keep the pressure on by killing player B the cycle will never end. In general unless you need to break a sentry clinch point I wouldn't wait for ubers.

I hope to play with you guys sometime :)

I saw your scrim going on last night on your server...thought about asking you for a pass to log on and watch, but didn't want to give the opposing team the idea that I'd be helping anyone. Sorry to hear you guys didn't win, but at least you came out with some ideas about improving.

Note it wasn't a scrim, it was a match for the STA league that we're in. Spectators are not allowed in game, but you can watch on Match TV. I'll get you guys a password for next game if you want, but I'm not sure how many slots are available for watching.

Bakey, would love to have a scrim with you guys on Impact, if you're interested and other ToJ TF2 members are up for it?

I've never really liked Impact, even when it was a Q3F map, perhaps I'm missing something. :P

Hmmmmm...that "defense until we have ubers" strategy definitely sounds like a winner, but isn't necessarily "fun". However, like any strategy, it can be broken. You just have to have the experience to recognize what the other team is doing, you can work against it.

And yea, sticking together is *really* important, especially when the *other* guys are sticking together. :P

Sorry man, a little late notice to get things organized. :P I'm also away this weekend, visiting family.

What would be a good time in the coming week to scrim? Late evening (after 9pm EST) on Mon or Tues works best for me, but we'll also need to round up some players. Bakey, let me know a good day and then we'll organize from there.

Looking forward to it. :)

PS - Any ToJ members interested in getting in on this, post here.

Tuesday nights are match nights for us. We usually have a good crew around on weekend nights though. What about next Friday?

If you guys could use an extra player, I would gladly join in. I could play as a medic.

However, if you guys are really serious about the scrim, I wouldn't mind sitting out. My need for more practice really shows.

This weekend is a long one for some people (Civic Holiday for the Canadians...I don't think the US has anything?), so we'll see how many people we can pull together. I can play, but only in the early evening.

The best bet for most of us is going to be after 8PM on Friday or Saturday. I'd say we just pick one of those days and see who all we can get to play. Even if it's 4v4 we can have a good time on some smaller maps, like 2Fort or Mach4.

Hey Bakey,

Ok, I'm on for tomorrow evening, and Sloth, if you can make it, that's two. Slalom may be on later, and I'll have to quit after 10pm so we could swap. Will still need to drum up some more players though. Made an announcement on the Steam Group, we'll see who else we can get.

Got a friend coming over to hang out on Fri night. I'll do my best to make some time for this if I can though.

Why don't we do this. Why don't we schedule this a week out rather than trying to scrape together enough guys to play last minute?

I know I'm not gonna be around this weekend because I've got family coming in. What if you guys start a new thread about scrimming with us NEXT Friday and get people to reply/commit to scheduling time to make it?

Ok, next friday's better for me and probably will be for others, I'll start a new thread and make a new announcement!

Cool. That works out better for me too. Something came up, and I was thinking that I might only be able to join late tonight Next week sounds great.
