Okay, so I finally discovered how awesome Dennou Coil was...four months after it aired in Japan.

I'd like to stay a little more current this season, so I'm out to find the best of the new series.

I've already concluded that I'll be passing on Kanokon and To-LOVE-Ru.

My download queue is already backing up, thanks to the recent return of Battlestar Galactica, so I want to make sure I pick up only the best and brightest episode ones--at least until I can get back on a 4MB connection.

So what do you all recommend this season? I know it's early, but you can tell a lot about a series by its first episode.

Code Geass R2 definitely.

Also, Conclave is doing a series called Nabari no Ou and they describe it as:

In addition, we are doing a second series with AnimeOne, Nabari no Ou. The first episode has aired already and it's pretty awesome if you like action and ninjas.

The official website can be found here.

Sadly Clannad and Gundam 00 both finished :\

Allison and Lillia looks pretty good, it is sorta like a weird universe set in a WW1 style era but the first episode doesn't get very far at all.

Vampire Knight is very good, humans and vampires trying to coexist, bad idea.

I have Neo Angelic Abyss downloaded but have yet to watch it but m.3.3.w rates it pretty good.

Macross Frontier!
Code Geas R2 (season 1 was good)
Vampire Knight was pretty good start

I've got Allison to Lillia, Neo Angelique ~Abyss~ and Wagaya no Oinarisama downloading...

Just a quick question....the audio seems to be off on the GG sub of Geass R2, and I'm waiting on Menclave, I think episode 1 is done and now they're working on 2, but I don't see any downloads on their site. Which versions are you guys downloading?

anything i would be interested in? i loved ef-tales of a memory and gundam 00 this last season, so whats new in spring?

blackgravity - I grabbed the GG sub and it worked fine for me.

atown - Macross!!

As for a harem-replacement for ef, there's nothing that really jumps out at me as something along those lines, but Allison and Lillia seems (just based off ep 1) to be something like what you'd need. The rest of the season hasn't jumped out yet so I can't really point to anything. As a side note, Kanokon and To LOVEru are both romantic shounen anime-yet they have an almost obscene amount of fan service in them.

I watched A&L ep2 and it seems to be forming pretty well. It sorta reminds me of full metal alchemist in terms of story technique.

update: The GG works alright for me, I just can't skip ahead to where I had stopped it I guess. Now to find the time to watch Eps 1 and 2 + Nabari no Ou

Kidan, which macross? theres like 5 on there. i'll check out A&L though

I just started watching Blood+, and it's very very good! I know it's not new or anything, but who cares!?
I know it makes me sound like a snot, but...

Dubbed = unwatchable.

I'm not saying this to be elitist or witty or anything of the sort. I mean that I can not physically tolerate watching dubbed anime. It makes my stomach turn.

When series localization teams start hiring actual voice actors and actresses instead of random people off the street, then I'll be able to watch a dub.

EDIT: The same goes for games with English voice acting. One of the main reasons I put Final Fantasy X down after only playing an hour into the game was the cringe-inducing voice acting.

The only reason I put down the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2 game was because of the voice acting. It was a fun game, but the voice acting made it unplayable.

Now lets bring this full circle tek. you would rather listen to some awkward japanese war cry in Outlaw Star, then an an English one that makes sense and doesnt sound uber retarded?

Outlaw Star, while very fun, is still not what I would call high-caliber anime. When I think of voice acting that pulled me into the series, I think of Mai HiME, Dennou Coil, and Samurai Champloo.

And, to be honest, I find shouts of "LEVEL UP-OO" and "NICE IDEA-UH" to be much more entertaining than I should.

I have a long list of episode ones to download, but I've already watched the first episode of Bus Gamer.

Bus Gamer = meh.

It feels like someone watched a bit of Bleach then decided to slap a fresh coat of paint on the classic "gladiator" concept. To their credit, it's a somewhat interesting concept, but it's hampered by using traditional anime stereotypes: the socially unaware nerd, the average guy who mistakenly thinks his apathy and self-loathing makes him "deep" and "cool" (c.f. Cloud Strife), and the yakuza-type who gruffly refuses to associate with non-thugs.

Characters are usually what draw me into an anime and Bus Gamer doesn't offer anything new or even engaging in the way of characters.

Bus Gamer isn't bad, and it'll likely be popular when they bring it to the states in a few years, but it's not remarkable in any way. Most series that have really amazed me (Mai HiME, Read or Die TV, Clannad, etc.) had a very strong first episode.

I've downloaded the first episode of Soul Eater, but haven't watched it yet.

high caliber? define high caliber....

For series: Mai HiME, Dennou Coil, and Samurai Champloo. :D

For movies: Tekkonkinkreet, Spirited Away, and Ghost in the Shell.

In other words, series and moves that leave an impact on the audience aside from "well, that was fun." I love silly comedy series (my wife and I are currently watching and enjoying Hayate no Gotoku), but it's the more dramatic series that have a greater impact--at least on me.
