Publisher Namco Bandai has announced that Soul Calibur IV (PS3, X360) will ship to North American retailers on July 29, according to a report from GameSpot.

[...]

Revealed last June, Soul Calibur IV is the first of the franchise to feature online multiplayer. Continuing the tradition of Soul Calibur II's console-specific characters, it includes Star Wars icon Darth Vader as an exclusive playable character for the PlayStation 3 version, with counterpart Yoda appearing only in the Xbox 360 edition.

Darth Vader on the PS3. Yoda on the Xbox 360.

Since Microsoft seems incapable of fixing their hardware issues, it looks as though it might be time for me to start saving up for a PS3. Too bad my wife and I will both be paying student loans and shopping for houses starting in May.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Force-wielding muppet just as much as the next person...but c'mon. Seriously. Doesn't a character half the height of every other character in the game seem a bit cheap?

Seriously, once the DLC hits, I will pay up to $10 just for Yoda. Really. That being said, I would never, ever choose Yoda over Vader. Never.

I'm gonna be picking up a second job probably just to pay for summer releases, it's looking insane.

I wouldn't be too quick to ditch MS to get a PS3 for a stable system. Reports of error 80010514 for the PS3 are popping up all over the internet. The extent of the issue isn't quite known yet (and for good reason. the RRoD wasn't really well known until months into that issue as more and more consoles fell). At least with the 360, you'll get a year of warranty for any failure and 3 years for RRoD. But probably best to wait and see what's happening when you have the cash to pick either one up.

I've heard that error has to do with people turning off consoles during firmware installs, but that is far from official. Sony have already said they have no idea.

No worries there.

Neither my wife nor I have employment lined up for after May 11, the day after she graduates and starts paying student loans.

I also have a backlog of games to play through. I'm about 40% through one RPG that will likely take another 60 hours to complete, then I plan to play through Ocarina of Time and Dragon Quest VIII. And that's just covering the RPG genre.

I won't be hurting for anything to play any time soon.

Still, I'll likely be looking toward another next-gen console purchase at some point and I just can't justify spending money on something that has a high chance of failing. I don't care if Microsoft covers the shipping; I don't think it's reasonable to expect customers to tolerate going 6-8 weeks without the item they paid for because the company failed to work out hardware issues they've known about for over a year.

Plus, the PS3 has Darth Vader. I think it's absurd that they're limiting the Star Wars characters to one per game, but if I had to choose one, it would be Vader.

Well hopefully the DLC to get the other console's character will be out by fall. The demand is high enough, and I highly doubt the license for exclusivity for each character is a legal thing, just a bonus for whatever reason. I mean, it just makes sense.

Yoda is green, and Xbox has always had a green themed kinda look.

The PS3 is BLACK and SHINY, like Darth Vader's helmet, so really, it's a no brainer.

I'll be curious to see if they do release the other characters for each system eventually. I know they had exclusive characters for each system with SC2. It was kind of a cool idea until I went to someone else's place to play and they didn't have an xbox so I couldn't use Spawn.

Namco Bandai has already expressed interest in DLC in the future, and seeing as the characters aren't first party to their respective console, I'm sure they would love taking our money on down the line.

Downloadable content for a fighting game?

Uh oh. This is a slippery slope.

Well I meant as far as Yoda and Vader go. They said nothing is stopping them from releasing downloads for each character on the other man's machine.

Also, I think Tekken 5 (which is a download anyway) has bonus download content.

Fighters seem like they would be the best games for DLC. New levels (and in SC, new weapons). I mean, I don't see how it isn't bound to happen anyway, everything else has DLC. Ir works for Rock Band and Guitar Hero (which I have failed to EVER see the fun in, I can honestly say I will NEVER play either game, and will never miss out on anything.)
