Japesland and I are hanging out in the CGA IRC channel (#cga on GameSurge) and watching the Sony E3 press conference.

...My forehead hurts from all the facepalms.

So apparently they're showing some new Uncharted game in a ruined city. Or something. I don't know, all these games are starting to look the same.

Okay, so it's not Uncharted. It's The Last of Us...which looks like Uncharted with a daughter AI, stealth takedowns, and...profanity. Lots and lots of profanity.

EDIT: And the Sony E3 conference is over. There's an hour of my life I'll never get back. Now I'm going to go play Jamestown or Cave Story+ or some other awesome indie PC game so I can stop feeling embarrassed about being a gamer.

Embarrassed about being a gamer? What do you mean? Sony had a rock-solid conference compared to Microsoft/Ubisoft/EA.

I didn't watch any of the other conferences and only watched the second half of Sony's press conference. Assassin's Creed, God of War, and The Last of Us all looked like more of the same (now with 80% more profanity!) and that Wonderbook demo made me wince.

Maybe the first half of the presentation was awesome and I just missed it. But seriously, that Wonderbook demo was embarrassing to watch.

Was there much about Dust514? That was literally the only reason I wanted to watch it... but I had to be at work.

Nothing on Dust514, maybe there's more info when crews get to the show floor.

Tek, check the E3 gameplay for Playstation All-Stars: Battle Royale. Yes they had mature games, but there were other things to be interested about too.

You need to watch Microsofts, it was horrendous. Mentioned a few games, rest was nerdy talk about extra features the 360 will have and Usher showed up to dance. The Black Ops 2 demo they showed was crazy choppy as well. Ubisoft had some weird banter between hosts but you need to see the teaser and E3 gameplay trailer of Watch_Dogs. That game will pique your interest if you're looking for something fresh. EA had Dead Space 3 with drop-in/out co-op (YES), not much else. Oh, and a new Sim City that doesn't look garbo.

New information about CCP Games upcoming free-to-play MMO FPS DUST 514 is coming to light today at E3.

Beta Testing
The first beta event of the summer which begins on Friday June 29th and lasts thru the weekend. It will be the first of many betas throughout the summer, you can signup for beta at www.DUST514.com/beta

PlayStation Home Integration
DUST 514 will be fully integrated into PlayStation Home, starting at E3. Debuting as part of Sony’s Virtual E3 Experience, the DUST 514 Home Space is a way for users to get up close and personal with the New Eden universe. In addition, the first 10,000 visitors to the DUST 514 Home Space will be able to get “All Access” beta keys, guaranteeing them access to all the DUST 514 beta events over the summer. The DUST 514 Space will remain live and accessible to players throughout the summer, and Home users can expect additional beta keys to be distributed via the Home Space in the future.

PlayStation Vita App
DUST 514 also supports the PlayStation Vita in the form of a companion app. Officially titled DUST 514: Neocom, the app integrates services that incorporate the feel and functionality from DUST 514 on PlayStation 3, with a focus on customization, communication and trade. Each character can be customized and configured using DUST 514: Neocom; players can create and edit customized fittings (load-outs) with a huge variety of dropsuits, weapons, equipment, modules and vehicles. The Vita app will also access a wide range of social features, such as the in-game Mail system and Friends List to keep up with game dynamics, and players can purchase new items, weapons and vehicles from the DUST 514 Marketplace using either ISK (in-game earned currency) or Aurum (purchased currency).

If they're talking about the Dust 514 area in the virtual E3 space in Home, then you have to complete a series of 12 silly "objectives" to get into the area. I'm already signed up for the beta, so I'll pass on the Home integration if it's going to take more than 5-10 minutes.

Which is a shame because I'm very interested in Dust 514 (though primarily because of the promise of keyboard + mouse controls on a console FPS).

Watch Dogs looks INCREDIBLE!!
Yes. No. Kinda? It was pretty. It seemed seamless. The gadgetry was neat. Game could be excellent. I watched the ten minute gameplay trailer.

...couldn't help but feel like I was watching an amalgamation of Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto, and a little Stranglehold, though.

"More of the same" tends to be the bread and butter of the mainstream industry for better or worse. I'm not actually opposed to it when the games are good, and Watch Dogs probably will be. I just didn't see any real hook for the game in the trailer that made it look substantially different from (or otherwise preferable to) Assassin's Creed.

...perhaps with a bit of irony, I'm actually pretty stoked about Assassin's Creed III. Those games have very fun gameplay mixed with evolving settings and narratives that I personally find quite engaging, and I'm excited to soon continue that storyline in the American Revolution. :O

Sorry if I'm raining on parades at all. Like I said, gameplay looked really solid. I'm just not as excited about the game as most people I know seem to be. ;)

That argument seems pretty weak. Every game rips off ideas from other games. I thought Skyrim had some original cool things, until I played Divinity 2 and saw they had those mechanics earlier. I keep hearing these "we need something revolutionary" arguments and I'm not sure what people are dreaming of. You want the holodeck on Star Trek? I think there can be major improvements to today's games that don't come from the games themselves. Triple screen gaming, 5.1 surround sound, cyborg gaming lights, flight sticks, joysticks, gaming chairs, kicking family out of the house and turning up the sound, keyboard with special key layouts, etc. These things can take the most mundane game and make it spectacular. Just Cause 2 is one of the best gaming experiences I've had due to it's native support of surround gaming.

That argument seems pretty weak.
I... think I missed the part where I made an argument, mate.

Saying it didn't seem like anything new wasn't an argument about the game's potential quality. It was simply an observation. The part where I plainly stated that I'm looking forward to the new Assassin's Creed clearly demonstrates that I don't think games need to be revolutionary to be good or otherwise appealing, a stance that I also shared quite plainly.

Besides, my explicitly saying that I think the game could, and probably will, end up being great was in agreement with your hype.

However, my lack of hype (which was that and only that. I didn't speak ill of the game if you take my words in the context they were stated; I simply spoke of my near-apathy toward it) stems from the seeming lack of a hook in the gameplay trailer I watched.

So, I'm really not sure what the problem was.

Then again! I do know that the game is coming out at some point, and that you'll get to enjoy it when it does. What's more, I hope it surpasses the hype you have for it. :)
