Some Dota2 questions

A while back I noticed in TF2 trading that people were offering Unusals for DOTA2 keys. So I applied to be in the DOTA2 beta. Since I'm not even sure what DOTA2 is other than it's like a mod of Warcraft III (which I don't play) I was pretty sure I wouldn't get in.

Add in the fact that I don't really play RTS games since the original Warcraft and Starcraft because I suck really bad at them and you can understand the quandary I found myself in today.

I was totally honest on the beta application. I explained the number of hours I play RTS games now and in the past year (0). I explained I had 0 hours experience with DOTA or DOTA 2. And yet today I was accepted into the Beta.

1. How do I get this "uber valuable" key?
2. Since I don't really like RTS games becaue while I'm busy building bases and troops, the other player sends in 3 uber troops and I die within 5 minutes of the game starting, Why should I play?
3. Am I being punished?
4. If I decied to play, what is the best way to play for me?

Steps are as follows...

1. Sent uber valuable key to Gerbil.
2. Gerbil trades key for fat loot.
3. Gerbil laughs manically.
4. Gerbil does not play Dota either so he really has no answers >.> (wait I think my responses do answer your number 3 question after all! :D :p ).

Hmmm looking online, unless there is a run on sites offering fake keys, there appear to be several sites offering beta keys now. Site for a Steam beta sign up too. I'll see if I can get a key just to see if I can.

to be continued...

Edit: How did you get your key (well not key but whatever response saying you where in or where did you sign up) Wolfeman? I checked one site, which was total shlock, but the Steam signup seems legit.

I went to the steam site for the beta signup. Signed up to be in the beta even tho I have 0 experience with this game or pretty much any game like it.

Got a letter from steam saying I was accepted into the beta.

CONGRATULATIONS!
YOU HAVE BEEN INVITED TO PLAY DOTA 2

To get started - launch Steam, locate the game in your library and follow the instructions to install the game.

As always, we rely on your feedback to improve the game, so please drop us a line and let us know how we're doing.

To install Steam, click this link: www.steampowered.com/about

Thanks, and enjoy your game!

Still confused about where this valuable key comes into play.

Maybe there is no key for the Steam version and it's already bound directly to your account? Did you check your games listing under Steam?

Edit: Bingo http://dota2talk.com/general/where-to-enter-dota-2-keys-on-steam/
I didn't even need to activate or put in any "key"
If somone sends it to your email account thats linked to your steam account its automatically activated if you accept it.

Keys must only be attained by non-Steam methods.

Two things:
  1. Dota2 is not a real-time strategy game in the same sense as WarCraft III or StarCraft. You only control one unit (well, at least in League of Legends; I haven't played any other DOTA game for more than an hour or so) and there's no base building. Dota2 is more like a competitive action RPG than a RTS.
  2. When I received a Dota2 beta invite, it was linked directly to my account. There was no way for me to hand it off to anyone else or trade it for anything else.

That said, is anyone playing this and enjoying it? Because I'm having a ball.
I checked to make sure and, yes, the Dota2 NDA was lifted last September.

I've spent a short time (10-15 minutes total) spectating matches, but haven't played any yet because if Dota2 is anything like LoL, playing solo with and against strangers is out of the question and I've yet to see many ToJers playing Dota2 yet.

Agreed. Even if you've played dota before dota 2 is not a particularly friendly group. In other words, I you have the lowest score you will be harassed. I have yet to see an exception.

So before I headed to work tonight, I installed the game and kind of watched a match. It appears very similar to a game that was one of the achievement games during the steam coal pile recently. Can't think of the name

I was pretty meh about the game.

Now that I hear that DOTA 2 is a very competitive game were people get rude about those who can't play I really don't think I'm gonna play.

Thanks guys!

League of Legends is the same way, but LoL can be fun when played with friends. (I also prefer bot matches since bots are typically more polite than the average LoL player.) If LoL wasn't popular among ToJ members, I would have uninstalled it long ago.

Since not many ToJ members are in the Dota2 beta yet, I'll probably hold off on playing until I can get at least 3 ToJ members in a Dota2 game before playing a match.

I wouldn't dismiss the game just because the community is toxic, but I also can't argue very strongly in favor of taking the time to learn the game if you're not interested in the gameplay, either.
