Slow network transfers in Vista

Why would it take an estimated 13 hours to transfer 256MB from my media center/torrent box (running Windows XP Pro SP3) to my new notebook (running Vista Ultimate SP1) across my wireless network?

I'm going to use a thumbdrive to move the files over, but I'd like to use the wireless network for file transfers and streaming video in the future.

Are you using a sync program to do the move like SyncToy or AllwaySync? The regular windows gui for a copy is usually way off base with its time estimates in my opinion. If you are moving anything over 100meg I would recommend a sync program that allows for resume and verification checking.

Nope.

The initial estimate may be off, but I found in XP that the estimated corrected itself in the first 10-15 seconds of a file transfer.

And I never had a file transfer this slowly over the network in XP.

I hit this with vista..is UAC off?
I don't believe it was turned off at the time.

I transferred a 180MB file (the ToJ TF2 server map pack) over the network last night and it transferred in about 2 minutes and 15 seconds, so I have no idea why the 256MB transfer would have taken so much longer.

I've only had faster transers since I changed to vista so I'm not exactly sure. the UAC and any other random permissions would be the place to check though

The wireless NIC in my notebook is an Intel Wifi Link 5100. Not sure if that makes any difference, though.

I've only transferred a few files over the network so far, and I've only had issues with one set of files. The other set transferred as quickly as I expected it to.
