Tribe of Judah StarCraft Series Chapter Leader
Basically (and this is very important) both servers are essentially PVP; however the difference is that one is open pvp, and one is not.

On a normal server, you can only attack a member of an opposing faction if they are 'flagged' for combat.  To become flagged, you can simply either type "/pvp" or you can attack an NPC.  If anyone heals you, or otherwise helps you in battle, then they too automatically become flagged.  This is also how raids work.
Note: Guards of the opposing faction will ALWAYS fight you, no matter what.

On a PVP server the countries and areas are split up into zones.  Some zones' names will appear green in color, and this means it is a safe zone for you to do business.  All major cities will be green to their respestive faction's members.  A yellow color means the area is 'contested', which is where zones are fought and won for.  Depending on who is controlling this zone at a certain time this area can be a very dangerous place to adventure in.

Both servers will support raids and battlegrounds.

At first our guild supported Normal servers as the official servers we would play on, but now we're asking for your input.

We have many married couples who will not be able to play as often as some of our other members, and I think it will become a real hassle for them if they login for just a couple of hours on a weekend only to end up dying many times to finish just one or two quests.  This was our main concern, and initially why we chose the safer 'normal' server.

However, some of our married couples are actually asking to play on an open PVP server; as they feel this is where the real game is at.  And, frankly, they're right.
It feels very strange to me to walk past an Undead character and not be able to fight them, nor them me; especially when the entire story surrounding Warcraft tells me that I'm at war with this race.

Personally I'm really torn between the two.

I can understand how aggravating PVP can be, but at the same time I don't feel right playing on a server where I can't openly fight, or be fought by, a hostile race.

I absolutely love the entire story surrounding the Warcraft universe, and I'm real big on adventuring.  However, part of adventuring is the feel of being threatened.  For example, you don't adventure by talking with your friends in the city; you do it by going out in the more dangerous areas of the world, and in turn discovering and finding some really cool events that happened while you're doing so.

Our guild will be real big on grouping, and as such we wouldn't have too much of a problem on either server.  In fact, I think it could actually benefit our guild if we did join a pvp server, because this causes us to, indeed, form parties just so we can get through an area and to quest and explore in it.

Please understand that if we pick a server and it doesn't seem to fit our guild and how we play then we can easily find another to join.

Please post your thoughts below - we need to hear from you!

i voted for PVP because during my time in the beta i played on the "normal" server which was nice but i did not like watching the Horde players running through Duskwood, Redridge, Elewyn Forest, and other Alliance areas and not being able to frost bolt or attack them at all.

While i do understand that griefing can happen, i am sure Blizzard will find a way to help avoid this, plus it will make going to the Scarlet monastry more fun ;)

This is a hard decision as on one hand the PVP server sounds like a lot of fun grouping together hunting the filthy hoarde, it may tend to turn into a gank fest getting wooped on during quests.

Though the pvp may lead to more grouping together and camaraderie and give some more fun. The Normal server is a bit safer and friendly to people with less time to invest.

I think I would prefer the PVP server as it is very annoying running into a Tauren in Goldshire and you're only choice is to /dance with him.

I personally think PVP is a very good addition to these types of games. One thing we will have to make sure is clear is that leveling in the later levels will be slower because of pvp and some zones will be controlled by different factions at different times. I posted a good article you guys might want to read in the other thread about the pvp servers. I'm all for it, and I have some friends in another guild who is going pvp (they are not a Christian guild) that we could probably ally with. Depends on what you all think.

uhh no I didn't write it. I copied and pasted it.

dude, how smart do you think I am?

PvP! I loved PvPing in southshore even at my low levels (level 44 against 60s). I always get an impulse to attack some horde nearby, then realise I can't because I'm on beta.

As a guild, we can support any member who is being ganked by the opposing horde. If they are being attacked, then they could simply ask others for help and we'll come running.

How would you like for us to use a standard (PvE) server for the main realm we play on, and then a PvP for when we create alternative characters?

Is this a suitable style of play for our guild?

We should still get optimal play time for each server.  About 2/3's of our time directed to one realm, while roughly 1/3 directed to another.  What do you think?

seeing how most votes are for PVP why not put our mains on a PVP server, and then have our alts on a carebear server.

Well, partly because out of seven of those votes only one of those people are married.

Also, seven votes does not at all accurately reflect our entire guild as a whole - there are still many people who have not had the opportunity to vote. Also, even after everyone's voted we still need to work some things out like how much time we can spend on each server.

well in all honesty if i where to get the game and be able to play it i would play on a PVP server whether the guild is there or not.

Also it would be nice to actually see these other mysterious members vote or come around once in a while

I think its a bad idea. I have many MMORPG's under my belt and can tell you from past experience that it will most likely cause the guild to fall apart. Some people will like playing on one server, others will like playing on another and eventually the smaller of the two will either be absorbed into different guilds or form their own. This is something I have seen time and time again happen. It might be good later down the road to create a second guild on a different server (maybe playing as horde or something) but not at the start.

That being said, I don't think there is much difference between the PVP and the non PVP servers, except in certain zones. What I would hate to see is us go PVP server, some people get discouraged by the corpse camping and the ganking that goes on, and leave for a non pvp server. That too would split the guild. What needs to be done should be what is in the best interest for the whole group. I wanted to check out the PVP server during beta to see how bad the ganking and stuff is going to be prior to release. I personally think if its not going to be too bad, then PVP would bring an added element to the later levels.

Those who read here and plan on playing that have not yet responded need to. Everyones input is needed in a decision like this.

Cory

For those of you in support of either server, please understand that there is not much difference between the two, as was stated in the first post of this thread.

On a normal server you cannot attack unless someone else is flagged.  On PvP you cannot attack unless you are in two of three zones; contested and safe.  And, even if you're in a contested the opportunity for you to attack and be attacked is only 50%.
On top of that, you won't even enter a contested area until you're in your 20's, and you won't enter a hostile area until you're in your mid 30's.

This is by no means a standard MMORPG, and Blizzard has put a lot of thought into both the normal and PvP servers.  On either server you will get to participate in fighting and raids.  I'd also like to point out that if you're playing on a PvP server and one area is contested and controlled by the opposite faction, you can simply move on to another; there are multiple areas for questing at all levels.

Hi All,

I'm new to ToJ and this will be my first time posting and I'd like to weigh in on the topic at hand.  So far the 1 PvE vote up top there would be me.
tounge.gif
If my wife were joined up already, we'd have 2 hehe  I've never played on a PvP server and if the guild should go that way I'm definatley willing to give it a try ect..., having said that though, I do have reservations.

First of all I agree with Cory's post that some folks, possibly my wife and I, may be discouraged by "ganking" ect allowed on the PvP and leave for a PvE server.  Actually, up until recently after reading an email from Bowser, my wife was dead set against even trying a PvP server.  You see she's not into gaming quite as much as me, not that I'm elite, I'm actually barely average. lol.  But, we love playing computer games together and even at times with our kids.
smile.gif
My wife and I our busy though and have to work toward getting our play time together and so when we do manage to get it we like to enjoy it.  As I'm sure you do also.  This would address our first concern that after paying our monthly fee of $15 a month per account we may log on only to have our evening of gaming trampled on by a random group of players who think it might be fun to take one of their many nights of play time to "gank" someone.  I've checked into the blizzard beta boards from time to time and see a lot of posts on how bad it is at times and also now with the new death penatly(10% durability penatly to all items) it could get even more frustrating. This type of thing would definatley cause us to leave for a PvE server where it is in the players power to choose wether or not they want to participate in PvP, which honestly I favor having the power of choice in this situation.  I think the raids and battlegrounds sound fun, but at other times it would be great to just go out and work on that elite quest without having to worry about getting trampled on by a passing herd of Tauren.    lol

Bowser wrote an email and addressed some of my concerns in saying the guild is very close and will be adventuring and leveling up together so we'd usually be in a group watching each others back.  I love that and I'm looking foward to it.  Bowser has been great and it is only because of his emails that we are willing to atleast give PvP a try if the guild does indeed choose to go that way.  I still am concerned with those times that it won't be possible for the group to be traveling together ect.. that may get bad.

Now, to go back to what Cory mentioned earlier about folks possibly becoming discouraged and then leaving for PvE, I also want to raise the question of bolstering our ranks, if we do indeed go PvP will that be an addition to attracting more perspective brothers and sisters to join us or a hindrance?  Honestly, if I hadn't already joined and had been corresponding to Bowser and had just happend to come across ToJ's WoW chapter I'd probably take a look at the PvP and think, "man, bummer, I would have loved to join but I just don't want to play on a PvP server, I'll check back from time to time to see if that changes."

Now, I admit, out of the 8 of us who have voted, I am in the definate minority
biggrin.gif
, and I want to thank you for the oppurtunity to share my opinion and concerns.  I'm very excited to be a part of ToJ and look foward to getting to know each of you better as we adventure together in the land of WoW.  hehe  Whatever is decided I'll support the decision and if we go PvP then I and my wife will give it a shot.  Like I said, I've never played on a PvP server so I have no experience whatsoever to go on.  So, I'll definatley be playing and will definatley give it a shot.

God bless and thanks for stoppin'

They acctually already changed it so there are no penalties in pvp at all in a new server update.

[b said:

I'm still talking with other people about the issue, but hopefully we can make a decision within the next several days.  I also have to bring it up with all new members, so as you can understand it can be a slow process.

Hopefully you can understand I'm being unbiased in this...if there's any doubts, lol .

Wait... they added a penalty, then took it out? Dang, how long have I been away from WoW?

Stephen, I, and probably everyone else, agree with your concerns. I do not want to log in, only to have my playing time taken away by some gankers. From what I understand though, this is much more rare than it is made to seem like. For one, you won't be thrown out into danger until around level 20 (Before that, you're in safe areas where you have to attack first). Secondly, after reading some of the forums and talking to people who have tried the PvP server, I haven't seen many problems. Sure you COULD be ganked, but most people are nice enough to leave you alone. Third, I think most people are more than willing to help you out if you are being ganked. Finally, from what I've seen, the people who ARE ganked usually brought it on themselves and have caused some animosity with others.

After playing on the beta server to level 44, I can't say how much I was itching to switch servers. Travelling, levelling, and especially raids just aren't the same.

Ok, I'm really not trying to sway your opinion, just trying to alleviate some concerns
smile.gif
If anything, try to give both a try and see which is more enjoyable.

Just a heads up folks. The more I play on the pvp server, the more I am inclined to play on a PVE server after release. Constant hoarde attacks in Goldshire make it difficult to accomplish anything worthwhile at the early levels, and I found it very surprising they could infiltrate that far. I initially wanted full out pvp, but, things change....I'll update more as beta goes on, and I suggest each person in beta do so as well on their thoughts and opinions. We can have another vote near release.
