Serial ATA

Got a question, I'm building a computer for a family in my church, and they were interested in serial ATA HDDs, and I purchased them to use them in the computer, but the problem is that i've never used/installed a serial ATA HDD before. Do I need any before-installation warnings/look-outs? It also said in the motherboard manual that windows xp sp1 or higher has to be installed before using serial ATA. Can i disable serial ata through bios even though the HDD only has a serial ata connection?

Any support/help would be great

Supposing theres no pata emulation in the bios, then will I have problems installing an OS besides Linux or Windows xp Sp1, cuz i only have windows xp non-sp, and I don't know where I buried the linux cd and I'm still a nub in linux.
