Samurai Champloo

I just finished watching Samurai Champloo, and it was pretty sweet! Thanks Tek for the suggestion. Now that those 26 episodes are done with, what should I watch next? I like ninjas, dragons, magic, and conspiracies. Maybe that'll help.

Suddenly, I have this urge to get in a swordfight...

If you're talking about fansubbed anime, I can give you a few suggestions. This season, my wife and I are watching...
  • Hayate no Gotoku
  • sola
  • Lucky Star
  • El Cazador de la Bruja (but only when there's nothing else to watch)
We just watched the first episode of Nodame Cantabile and we both liked it, so we're going to download the rest of the available episodes.

If you're talking about retail anime, I recommend...
  • Mai HiME
  • Karen
  • Shakugan no Shana
  • Black Cat
  • The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi
We watched those series while they were being fansubbed. They have since been licensed in the US and were available in part or in their entirety at Best Buy when we stopped in on Saturday night.

We always stop by the anime section when we visit a retail store to point and laugh at how absurdly expensive anime DVDs are. Thirty dollars for 3 episodes? Get real!

Why wait six months and pay extra for a horrible English voice acting track when you can fire up a BitTorrent client and download fansubs instead?

NOTE: I am not advocating downloading series that have been licensed in the US. All anime mentioned in the first list has not yet been licensed for distribution in the US.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait wait wait.

Did you watched the subtitled version or the dubbed version?

Because if you watched the dubbed version, erase your memory of the series, rent the DVDs, and watch the series over again with subtitles and Japanese voice tracks.

Seriously, the English voice acting in Samurai Champloo is horrible, just awful.

  • Hayate no Gotoku <--lacks ninjas, dragons, magic, and conspiracies, but seriously funny...some action/fights, and I think more to come
  • sola <--I can't really tell you. Just watch it. Stick with the first few eps...you'll be glad you did.
  • Lucky Star Makes fun of ninjas, dragons, magic, and everything else in a wonderfully hilarious way
  • El Cazador de la Bruja (but only when there's nothing else to watch)<--still hoping this one grabs my attention
We just watched the first episode of Nodame Cantabile... lacks those things in every conceivable way...are you willing to branch out?

  • Mai HiME <--Watch it. You must. Really. Magic, fighting, conspiracies. Awesome characters.
  • Karen I love this one. Closest fit to your criteria is magic...I don't know....
  • Shakugan no Shana (sorry, didn't see it)
  • Black Cat <-- bounty hunters, action, humor
  • The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi <-- Conspiracy! Heh, kinda.

QFT.

I'm mulling through tokko after it aired on "ani-monday" on sci-fi.
I was interested in both this one and Noein when I read the synopsis at Wikipedia - but the voice acting was the usual atrocious, we're foolish Americans, and cartoons are for kids, tripe. *sigh* watching fansubs has spoiled me... I'm still amazed at voice actors who take their craft seriously, and don't treat every anime like an episode of Dragon Ball Z...

Anyways, the fansubbed anime series I'm currently watching are:
  • Hayate no Gotoku!
  • Sola
  • Seto no Hanayome
  • Dennou Coil
  • Kekkaishi
  • Toward the Terra
I also just downloaded the first ICE OVA and the first 4 episodes of Hitohira...

If you haven't watch Ghost in the Shell do so, I really liked it and the voice acting wasn't bad (but subs are always so much better)

Funny you should mention that. I just was telling Tek we forgot to mention that we saw this at Best Buy as well. It was good. Not especially fast-paced, but interesting and well-written.

I like the story that's being given with Noein - and if I can grin and bear the voice acting I will probably continue watching this.

Particular issues of offense in that regards: The kids don't sound like children. And the overly, obnoxious southern belle accent that makes Blanche from the Golden Girls sound like a Yankee...

There seems to be a lot of choices in the way of anime, so do you think you could give me a brief summary? It'd be easier to match my interests that way.

Kidan, do you mean to tell me that you're watching the episodes dubbed? For shame!

Noein is one of the best series I've ever seen. I've always been fascinated by any story that uses parallel universes to explore to what degree our personalities are shaped by choice, by circumstances, or design.

That definitely sounds like a bad English dub to me.

Subtitled! Have no fear!
Good man.

yes, I know... dubbed is the evil.... anyways, I watched the dubbed thing on sci-fi monday night. Anime is obscenely expensive in the stores (silly -since the Japanese market pays for the dev costs of the series, so the American market only needs to pay for the English voice acting) so I don't want to just go willy-nilly an buy a series i've not seen....

I think the Japanese Kansai dialect is often dubbed as Southern belle. I guess they feel like it's the closest thing.

Apparently Shizuru's (My HiME) English voice had the same kind of thing going on (Kyoto-ben). I haven't heard the dub, but I know some felt it was appropriate because they have a similar lilt/flow/formality.

I have no idea if this applies to Noein, but I thought I'd throw that out there.

I don't mind a southern accent... but there's a rather large difference between southern (which is my accent) and that horrid Golden Girls on crack-voice that Noein had in it...

Frankly, if they had sounded more like the actors from the movie Sweet Home Alabama then I'd probably been perfectly fine with it... *shrugs*

I can honestly say that that is the first time I have seen that phrase on the Internet.
