Riddle me this

Ok so I got a new video card (EN8800GT) and 3gb of RAM. I also upgraded my iternet and my average ping on Aussie TF2 servers is around the 20 mark. SO why is TF2 framing so badly when the action is heavy. I feel like it is actually worse now then when I was using my 8600GT.

Is this just an internet latency issue or is the new card simply drawing too much power?

Oh on a side issue, would you all object to me joining your server even though I usually ping US servers at around 200? I know how annoying that can be so I am happy if it most people say it won't work.

What is the processor in your system? In my experience the processor has a lot heavier effect than the graphics card most of the time. You might also want to check the temps of your graphics card and processor. Some new systems scale back when they get too hot and that could cause problems.

Ok. So it must just be the way it is. I just loaded Gears of War which untill now has been unplayable. Now I have all pretty prettyies up to max and it moves along just fine.

I still am wondering whether a ping of 200 is unplayable for the ToJ server, so that question is still open.

Thanks all.

Yep I expect the processor is the key to any remaining probs Im having. AS well as temp. I am running a core 2 duo at 3ghz but it is not the new models by a long shot. I also basically had to fit an extension to my case to fit the 8800 in as it is nothing short of massive so the temp is most likely through the roof.

Gerbil doesn't care what your ping is the more TOJ the better :)... just join the team I am not on <kidding>:p

If you have a core 2 duo than your processor is definitely not the problem in TF2. Do you play with net_graph on? If you do is framerate actually dropping or is it just the players caused by the lag? If your framerate actually falls than the problem is most likely something other than your connection.

Hmm, try opening the console and type these:

fps_max 300 or fps_max 60
mat_queue_mode 2

This helps bunches but you may get some HUD errors as my sniper had four scopes overlapping with the second one. But it's for more FPS, so meh. :p

Good recommendation.

Press the console key in TF2 (by default, the tilde - that key below the ESC key and above the TAB key on most keyboards), type net_graph 3, hit ENTER, then go back to the game.

If nothing happens when you press the tilde key, it's likely because you don't have the console enabled. If that's the case, you may need to google for a tutorial on enabling net_graph.

As for ping: The server isn't configured to kick players over a certain ping, so you're welcome to join us whenever you'd like. I've found that the network code in TF2 is superior to most first-person shooters.

Riddle me this NOTE SP CORRECTION

Thanks guys. I jumped on yesterday during my lunch but everyone was just jumping offline. I did have a good time but healing with a low frame rate is interesting to say the least. Hopefully my Saturday your Friday will be a better time to come on board.

Guild wars used to be what I played most frequently but with PhD nearing completion (approx 10 months) I only have time for 20 min of gaming or so. So TF2 is my new game of choice so I hope to see you all online more often.

Cheers all

Welcome to the group ppar! 200+ pings are fine, so long as it's tolerable for your to play at. :) Be sure to add me as a friend (search for [toj.cc]Shagz or check the admins of the ToJ Steam Group), I tried looking you up but couldn't find anything under your name.

FYI I had similar problems when I upgraded to a 7950GT from my 7600GS. Bad framerates, etc. They didn't improve until I actually turned my settings UP and played at my monitor's native resolution, 1280x1024.

Hope this helps.
