Republic Wireless??

Officer SOE/LoE/Where's "here"?
So went into AT&T to do some phone shopping for better half, and found another basic phone she thought would work. Sales person comes out with it and I ask about the 15.00 activation fee. He says that and an 86.00 "upgrade" fee. Better half blows up and walks out, don't blame her. So we start researching all over again. We find Republic wireless out of NC. Choice of two phones, Moto G and Moto X, 25.00 month unlimited talk, text, and data. No contract, can make 2 changes a month to service no charge. Moto G with 16GB is 179.00 to start with and a choice of two other plans. A wifi only at 5.00 month, a wifi and cell at 10 a month. With a case and two phones 400.00 start up, with a cost of 50.00 month for two phones. Anyone have experience with Republic Wireless?

Tek *just* got them for his work phone. Like...a week ago? So surely he'll see this and chime in whenever he can. He got their most basic phone, and I think he's actually a little sad he likes it as much as he does...maybe even a little more than his "main" phone. So far it's been good for him because he can't get cell service where he spends most of his time at work, but with the wifi he's actually reachable. Sound quality on my end talking to him has been good/normal so far. I think I'm going to be switching to them from Straight Talk, or at least giving it a shot (I'd be using cell towers a lot more than he is--more than wifi for sure). They give you a 30 day trial period, I believe. Maybe talk to Tek if you spring for it b/c they have a referral system, I think. ;) That's not why I posted though!

tl;dr - Tek just got it, so far so good--quite good even? but hasn't had it long enough to give a thorough review

The wifi is part of the charm for me. Towers drop calls at my house like a hot potato, but I have a VERY strong wifi system at the house that reaches well even outside. Would just have to give it the pass code.

yeah i have a friend that just switched over and I think he likes it..... havent texted him for a while....... but we're in washington and it seems to work okay.

So far, so good on my end.

If you decide to go with Republic Wireless, PM me with your and your wife's e-mail addresses and I'll send you my referral code so you can each get $20 off and I get $40 total off my bill if you both stick with it (if you want).

Remind me again at the end of the month, we will change after the first.

I think that would depend on the individual state fees and taxes wouldn't it? Don't quote me on that, Tek should know a ball park figure.

From their FAQs, it says
How much are the taxes on the monthly service?

There are no hidden fees with Republic Wireless. State and local taxes do apply and vary by location. On average, our members pay approximately 17% of their monthly rate in taxes (on top of the stated monthly rate).

I ordered my phone and it'll be here tomorrow. I'm not sure how our tax works out here in MO because it had my phone purchase on that payment. I'm not totally sure Tek would be able to tell yet either until we get a "normal" bill. Or maybe I'm just derpin'....

Hmmm at 17% that would make the 25.00 service come out to 29.25 mo. Still worth it, of course again that depends on the state.

Today's my first day with it (actually just the afternoon). Gonna keep testing for a couple more days before moving my number, but so far so good. Not finding any reason to send it back.

Ok pulled the trigger on two of them. One with 10.00 service one with 25.00, both moto Gs obviously. No Sprint 4G in our area. Also ordered the Otter commuter case for hers, and Otter Defender for mine. Probably be here Tuesday or Wednesday. Very pricey by my Geezer standards, but whut can ya do? AT&T and Verizon both stink and they are the 2 biggies in our area.

edit: And tax for our area is 15%. And won't be able to port over our At&T numbers, as if that is any surprise. And RW was fair about it and warned about possible wireless coverage issues in our area. I plan on using mine at home on my WiFi and in a service corridor, and she plans on using hers mostly at Mc D's.

Good luck, hope it works great for you.

I will be able to port my number, but my straight talk doesn't renew for a few more days, so I'm going to keep testing/tinkering another day or two before I do it.

They came in and so far I am not impressed with how they deal with wifi. It was a big pain getting them to play nice with my home network, my better half's still has glitches.

Sorry to hear that. :(

I know mine was glitchy until I installed several updates. Maybe hit the Google Play Store, install all available updates, restart the phone, and try again?

Well that stinks I'm sorry. I've not had any issues on wifi. An issue or two while using cell service though.

The big issue is that it acknowledges the wifi signal, says it is communicating on it, etc., etc., but won't make or receive calls. Despite having done it several times already.
