Recommended Nintendo DS titles?

I'm *toying* with the idea of getting a DS. Lord knows I don't need another gaming system, and I'm still getting tons of mileage out of my Gameboy SP.

But it seems like there's *a lot* of great games dropping on the DS recently, or it seems like a lot of people are talking about 'em (like Puzzle Quest), but every time I'm in the store I forget what the titles are and all I see is "That's Raven!" and "Herbie the Love Bug" titles.

On my SP, I've gotten months of game time out of the Advanced Wars and Fire Emblem series. Do you own any DS games that you keep coming back to again and again?

PS - I tend to prefer my portable gaming in bit-sized chunks ie. play a session and save between subway stops, so any titles that are conducive to that kind of play pattern would be cool.

Step 1: Buy Mario Kart DS.
Step 2: Buy Tetris DS.
Step 3: Send me your Friend codes.
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit.

But seriously, Mario Kart DS and Tetris DS are fantastic games.

If you're into shmups, check out Nanostray. It's not the portable Ikaruga I was hoping for, but it's pretty good.

People rave about Animal Crossing: Wild World, but I just don't get it. Maybe I'm just too ADD to get involved enough to get addicted. (I had the same problem with World of Warcraft.)

WarioWare: Touched! is enjoyable if you're a fan of the WarioWare series.

I've only played a bit of Hotel Dusk and Trace Memory, but both are shaping up to be fantastic adventure games. I have to confess that I'm more interested in the story behind Trace Memory, though.

Metroid Prime Pinball is way more fun than it should be.

Sonic Rush is good, but if you're really hankerin' for classic Sonic action, pick up a re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 instead.

The little I've played of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time indicates it will be even more fun than the Mario RPG for the GBA (the name escapes me at the moment).

Metroid Prime Hunters is an amazing showcase of the technology behind the DS and a solid game overall, but (1) it'll probably cramp your hand after 15 minutes of play and (2) save points are spaced out too far apart.

Brain Age and Big Brain Academy are fun brain exercise games.

Picross DS is also way more fun than a picture crossword game should be. Seriously.

I've tried some other games, but those are the highlights.

On a related note: I'm dreaming of the day I hear Sega announce Rez DS. I know it'll probably never happen, but it's too cool an idea not to dream about.

EDIT: You can also check out this thread on the CGA General Discussion Forum for more recommendations.

Is that a reference to a movie/book? I've seen it used other places, such as YTMND and Something Awful.

I have no idea. It's just another Internet meme and less annoying than that Badger Badger Mushroom animation.

On a related note, I neglected to include New Super Mario Bros. in the last. There is one major issue with NSMB, though: You can't save until you complete a castle level or spend coins to open the path to a mushroom shop.

re: Rez...isn't there some DS game that was kinda sorta the same? It wasn't a shooter but a kind of musical experimentation thing, with little cellular creatures you ate up or something...I wish I could remember the name now, all I remember was that the art was blue.

What about Meteos? Heard that was really good. Ditto Puzzle Quest although I've never seen on in a store.

And I just read now that a Warhammer 40K game is coming out?!? "Warhammer 40k: Squad Command", developed by Relic. Turn-based squad combat, sounds like XCom.

Thanks for the recommendations so far!

Electroplankton. But it's not really a game; it's more of an electronic musical toy.

From what little I've played Meteos, I can say that I didn't enjoy it as much as Picross DS, Puyo Puyo Fever, or other puzzle games.

Ditto Puzzle Quest although I've never seen on in a store.
I only tried Puzzle Quest for maybe half an hour. I'm turned off by anything that resembles Bejeweled because the premise is based on luck as much as skill. Games like Tetris and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo are based more on skill.

There's a number of tactical RPGs. Luminous Arc and Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings are coming to the US soon.

And yes, there's going to be a Warhammer 40K game for the DS.

You're most welcome, sir. :)

It's a parody of the business plan of the underpants gnomes from a South Park episode. And no, I haven't seen it.

Their plan:

Step 1: Collect underpants.
Step 2: ?
Step 3: Profit

I recommend Animal Crossing if you're a collector-type. :) I recommend avoiding Cooking Mama; the "explanations" for each part are so unclear that I wanted to hurl my DS Lite out the car window...and I LOOOVE my DS. :)

I loved Cooking Mama. It's not good if you don't like a challenge, but I am the sort who will play each dish over and over obsessively until I unlock every one of them and complete it with 100 points (and I did). I know, I'm kind of sick.

They're making Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for the DS.

....

>_> <_<

>_<

Don't know if it'll be any good, but.... yeah...

I guess that's what's so great about the DS: you have games like Call of Duty and Cooking Mamma are on the *same* system. :)

If you like puzzle games, check out Prism: Light the Way when it's released in North America on Oct. 16.

My wife and I have been playing Planet Puzzle League against each other and it's been a blast. We're evenly matched, which keeps it challenging.

There are a ton of awesome games on the DS. Mario Kart, Elite Beat Agents, Contact, the Final Fantasy remakes, New Super Mario Bros, Advanced Wars and countless others I haven't gotten to play yet. The DS game library is probably one of the best ever not even taking into account the backward compatability.

Is anyone else interested in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for the DS? I'm not sure if it'll stink or not, but I'm somewhat intrigued by the possibility of some sort of FPS for the DS (I guess we have Metroid Prime: Hunters. I have played the demo, and it's pretty cool but not quite my style)

Brothers in Arms DS has already come out, but that's a third person shooter. TPS ftl.... IMO anyway
