Recommendations on DVD playing software (free)

We were trying to play a DVD through the computer at church last week and I was having fits with the software we had installed. I was wondering if anyone had any freeware DVD software they could recommend? IronTechie level - the computer is running XP. I am trying to get the church to pop for Win 7 (well a whole new computer for that matter) but one of our Elders is balking at it.

1. Media Player Classic
2. VLC
3. Windows media Player

Those softwares, especially 1. and 2., will be able to play home-made DVDs, and all of them will play produced DVDs (movies and the like).

If it's a Blu-ray DVD, then I recommend bypassing the computer as much as possible; use a PS3 or a home media blu-ray player instead, if you can.

VLC is like the skeleton key for so many formats. It's my go-to player most of the time.

I've used VLC, never thought of using it to watch DVDs (don't do that on my computer very often).

Downloaded, now I have to remember to take a DVD with me to check out the quality.
