RAM purchasing suggestions?

For the actual usage a media center isn't really worth it unless you spent tons of money on a huge tv and a proper audio setup.
I disagree.

My setup:
  • 27-inch Toshiba standard-def television
  • S-Video cable from desktop video card to TV
  • Speaker (3.5mm) out from PC to Aiwa stereo system (red/white component)
  • StreamZap remote with blue macro button configured to launch MediaPortal
  • MediaPortal
  • Several gigs of anime

For windows I usually just install cccp and use wmp. Then again I watch most of my downloads on my laptop (which is OSX). For the actual usage a media center isn't really worth it unless you spent tons of money on a huge tv and a proper audio setup.

I also disagree...I would say about 75% of the stuff I watch on TV was either downloaded or streaming from the internet...

Also...

My setup (italics are things different from yours):

  • S-Video cable from desktop video card to TV
  • Speaker (3.5mm) out from PC to Sony stereo system (red/white component)
  • iPod Touch remote with VLC App
  • VLC
  • Several gigs of anime

Very very similar to you Tek...

I need to figure out a cheap way to upgrade my desktop system from 768MB RAM to 2GB RAM.

My motherboard is an Epox 8KRAIPRO and takes DDR (not DDR2) PC3200 RAM.
/bump

Any chance some of the IT experts in our community have a box of old memory modules lying around with two 1GB sticks of DDR PC3200 RAM?

do they even still make that?
Nope. But they still sell it.

i checked, just got 512 sticks right now.
Orly?

Upgrading from 768MB to 1GB would still a performance boost, right? If so, might you be willing to part with your unused 512MB sticks for the cost of shipping? :D

Edit: Since Feb 2008 you still haven't bought the ram, Tek?
Two and a half years and I never could justify the $50 for the upgrade. I'd rather put that money toward a new, much (much) more powerful machine.
