There have been a few questions as to how raid teams are invited. I want to clear up a little bit for everyone.
I will start with Gruul's Lair. For Gruul's Lair we use the PhP site to sign up the first 35 people who want to go. Due to the restrictions of the PhP site, we cannot customize it for the instance. Now that different classes can do different things we have adjust. So, we use the PhP site to get a starting list. Just because you sign up does not mean you will automatically go. If you sign up first you are not automatically going either.
At raid invite time the raid leader announces, "Whisper me- WL add". When you do this you will activate an add on called EKWL. This will place you on the waiting list. The raid leader then checks to make sure you are signed up on the PhP site. If you are you will be in the que. When the raid leader is ready to go he will then proceed to random roll for the spots if there are extra classes. For instance, if there are 6 healing spots and 8 healers signed up then the raid leader assigns numbers to the priest 1-8 and has a roll off. He does a /random # and makes choices based on rolls. He or she does this for all the classes so as to be as fair as possible.
So this is how we are setting up raids. And yes all slots except the raid leaders are rolled for. Tonight, I was the 7th and next to last healer to make the raid.
For Karazhan it is a bit different. Raid leaders set times and will (if they have not been) do the same announcement. Then depending on where the raid is in Karazhan the raid leader may need to alter who goes and who does not. Once the raid is past Curator, gear and performance becomes an issue. A raid leader may very well take a better geared player over another.
Raid Leaders are encouraged to alternate people out for the earlier bosses to get more people in the instance (I can't remember the last time I saw the Maiden drop because I have the items I need from her). It is also in a raid leaders power to remove people based on healing and damage meters. If a team wipes three times, it is my suggestion that the bottom 1 or 2 dps be replaced and the bottom healer.
The officers are doing our best to as many people as we can into raiding. However, we have a shortage of leaders and setting up times is very complicated.
During the summer we wanted to go with only two teams. It is our intention to make changes in September.
If you have any questions please let me know.
