PvP for Friday, 7July06

DZwart

Legacy of Elijah Officer
For tonight I think we will plan on doing more AvA since we seem to be enjoying it so much lately. We'll plan on 2-3 groups of 4 and pulling in alliance members if needed. If you have never played AvA before, please feel free to join us. This is one of the easier PvP formats to learn. Each round rarely lasts more than 15 minutes. You receive xp points, Balthazaar faction points and Kurzick faction points for each kill as well as a Kurzick faction bonus dependent on your side's score at the end.

Also, please feel free to sign up for one of the following group types:

ViM Trappers - Group of 4 R/W's trapping together to capture and hold control points

Touch Rangers - Group of 4 R/N's meant as a fast moving capture group

Balanced (Random) group - On a previous night we did a group with 1 minion master, 1 spirit spammer and 2 other damage dealers. This group worked well.

EDIT: Added a little more description of AvA

I intend to bring a touch ranger, but will switch to either a trapper or spirit spammer if needed.

For those of you who have factions but have never tried AvA - it is really fun, and a lot different than GvG and HoH (evidenced by the fact that even Halonic likes it!) And trappers/touch rangers are extremely easy to do, once you get the hang of it. I do hope you will join us, and please feel free to contact me if you need help building a PvP trapper or touch ranger.

My ritualist has been having fun in AvA. I'd like to bring my MM in a balanced group. Good MMs seem to dominate out there. I have yet to try ViM with my Ranger but he now has it.

I plan to bring a VIM trapper. If circumstances dictate I can also bring a touch Ranger. I must admit that this has been fun. For whatever the reason it just doesn't have a PvP feel to it.

One other note, you receive Kurzick faction even if your side loses. You usually receive 200-600 Kurzick faction if you lose.......around 1200 if you win. You can either transfer the faction so the alliance gets credit or you can trade 1000 Kurzick faction for 1 amber chunk which is worth about 1k.

The touch Ranger build usually uses Offering of Blood as an elite. You can cap that from Morgriff Shadestone in Grenth's Footprint. An alternative to that elite is Grenth's Balance capped from the fourth facet in the Dragon's Lair mission.

Victory Is Mine elite can be capped from Sakalo Yawpyawl, a Grawl boss between Droknar's and Port Sledge.

If you can catch me online today I can help with caps for either one.

My initial try with a touch Ranger was less than stellar. However I have tried it many times since in AvA with much better results.
When I go AvA by myself I always take a touch ranger because I can do some damage solo with the toucher. A solo VIM trapper is pretty useless.

I disaggree, Ever seen what a ViM trapper can do in random?

I've tried VIMing by myself in random without too much success. But if you have a strategy that makes it work I'd like to hear it, because I enjoy trapping and would love to earn a little extra Balthazar faction.

I'm a total PvP newbie, so here's the newbie question of the day:

Can you be effective in PvP at low levels, or are you pretty much cannon fodder?

All of my characters are rp characters and I tend to do PvE primarily, so I have no knowledge of PvP in this game. :)

I wouldn't say completely cannon fodder, especially if you are close to 20, but you will be a marked target because the other team will see you as a softer target. Also, the 15 att point quests will help bring you up in power a little and these are available in Cantha a little sooner than in Tyria. If you're interested, post your character types and levels and we can give you a little advice on what skills and characters are your best bet for PvP. If you are in Cantha, AvA (Alliance Battles) is a good option to start. It is a little chaotic, but probably a little less stressful to learn.

Also, today's game update is all PvP related. Here are the details:

Guild Wars Website said:
Update - Friday July 7

* Updated the Hall of Heroes so that 3 teams compete instead of 5, games take place every 6 minutes instead of every 12 minutes, and the winning team is awarded 2 Celestial Sigils instead of 3.
* Updated the requirements to earn a Champion title. Fewer points are now required, and players receive a point for defeating any guild with 1200 or more rating points. Please note that points are earned only when the guild ladder season is open.
* Fixed a bug that prevented some players from leaving the Dragon Arena.

Do you have an open character slot? It sounds like you don't, but if you do you can make a PvP character. Then you just have to make it through the first challenges.

For anyone interested, ViM trapping is easy to learn; it uses R/W trappers and W/R or W/Me warriors. The touch ranger (R/N) isn't quite as easy unless you're used to a necro, but it's still very approachable.

touch rangers only take about 3 runs to figure out completely, just be aware that mesmers are the bane of the toucher, diversion is the touch ranger killer!

oh and btw anet has the final info to restore my account to my ownership :P

One other note about touch rangers, since they rely on Vampiric Bite and Touch, you have to have both prophesies and factions to have both of these skills.

Just make sure to use Wallow's and Touch of Agony when Diversion is active.

And, glad to have you back in game.

My ranger is a R/W, so sounds like trapping is the route for him when I get him levelled.

And no, I don't have any open slots. I'm well-known for having way too many alts. :)
