Professional Gaming and Online Tournaments

I know that many of us dream of being "professional" gamers. Today an article released outlined a $1.25 million dollar contract given to a Halo 2 gaming team, the largest contract ever for gaming. This got me to thinking, as well as dreaming. Do you wish that there was a wider spectrum of game genres which had serious online and in-person competitions/tournaments? I'm aware that Xbox Live ran a Project Gotham Racing 3 tournament recently and I'm bummed that I didn't get in on that. Racing is the genre that I would most like to see become a seriously competitive arena. What other genres do you wish had competitive online tournaments that actually led to cash prizes and public attention for the winners? And do you think that there are enough wannabe professional gamers (myself included) to keep tournaments like these afloat? Looking forward to your suggestions and thoughts. I'll be over there -------> practicing.

i really want to be a pro gamer, but im stuck concentrating at school. I know i could pwn so hard core at cs and other games but i just dont have a a minimum of 6 hours a day to game and practice.

I think pro gaming could be cool, but will certianly take a while to catch on. I dunno, I guess I would be interested in watching matches on tv of my favorite game or something like that.

I think the best model we have for how pro gaming will work is professional poker. It will never reach a mainstream level, but everyone will be aware of its existence and probably enjoy watching it occasionally.

Yes, that's my opinion as well.

Tournaments take a LOT of practice. My last big tourney had me putting in about 12 hours a day (if I wasn't sleeping or working, I was practicing) and buying the same hardware as the tourney required so I didn't change my feel when using their PCs. It was the Gateway tourney, did pretty well, 1st in my state on both attempts and 22nd in the nation.
