Processor Questions

So, I am looking at building a rig. I am not looking to max it out.

I am trying to determine the difference in value for 4, 6, and 8 core processors.

This is the product I am currently contemplating.

IBUYPOWER link.

Quad core is probably the most you'll need. If you're not over clocking you won't know the difference between 4, 6 and 8 cores.

It would depend on the application. For 3d gaming you are typically relying on your graphics card more than the processor. I believe 2d gaming tends to reverse that, but I could be wrong.

I know for rendering 3d scenes with Blender more cores = quicker results. But that is hardly a typical scenario.

First off, I HIGHLY recommend www.newegg.com for buying products. I've never had an issue from anything I've bought there, and though a friend of mine, while building his rig, actually had a part go bad, it was returned very promptly. With that said, I currently got a very basic gaming rig;

AMD Phenom x4 Quad Core Black Edition @ 3.5 ghz
4 gb of ram
1 gb NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti
500 gb HD

I built it this time last year for about $850.00. I had to replace my old video card, but since I got that NVIDIA a couple months ago, I've yet to have an issue. The question is however, how much money do you plan on putting forward for said rig? I also HIGHLY recommend building it yourself. Its honestly no where near as hard as it looks.

And NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER Buy from Ibuypower. Biggest rip off I've ever encountered.

I've never bought from iBuyPower.com before, but I do know that if you build it yourself it comes out to be cheaper.

But then again, you knew I'd recommend newegg. :D

I think you should build one yourself.

As far as processors you, you'd be fine with a 4-core processor.

He needs something for his wife to grab as a birthday present, home built won't work here. Ibuypower is fine and quite competitive actually.

Been doing Ibuypower for a while now, and doing fairly well. Even for problems they have a quick turn around, and very good service.

Ship it to office and build it there? :D

It is not the building that's the problem, its that its infinity easier to give the wife one thing to buy and not a shopping list of 22 parts that give 22 chances of her making a mistake or ask why each of the 22 parts is so expensive.

Premade is the only option here.

But, but, but.... Newegg has this handy feature that allows you to email a whishlist to someone, and they can buy from there. ;)

But, I agree, 90 percent of the time, 4 cores will do you just fine. :)
