Power Rangers: Mystic Force

My sons, a 5 year old and a 2 year old, are into Power Rangers. It's one of their favorite shows and I'll admit that I've been known to watch it with them. The newest show, Mystic Force, is a little disturbing to me. It seems to be centered around witchcraft. They actually have brooms that transform into speeder bikes for them to ride on and their leader has them practicing "incantations". Now, the basic premise of the show is the forces of 'good', the Power Rangers, fighting against the forces of evil. So it's basically pitching 'good' witches against bad ones. But it still boils down to glorifying witchcraft, much like the Harry Potter series. I have cancelled the series recording on my DVR and will probably not let me sons watch it. I don't think I'll be buying any of the toys associated with it either. Even though I know that magic and witchcraft are fictional, my sons are still young enough to believe that just about anything is real.

I'd like to know if any of you have seen this show or have any opinions about it or its premise?
 
its funny my parents thought it was evil 10 years ago lol. but yeah i agree with the addition of witchcraft i think it just kinda ruins it, even though i think it was ruined by the 3rd series

I think you are wrong about this.

When Moses and Aaron confronted Pharoh they did not have the joys of our modern day video effects to make stuff up, yet they were still able to make things happen.

Read Exodus chapter 7 & 8 to get a good idea of what they could and could not do. Witchcraft deals with powers coming from below, or demonic if you will.

Exodus 22:18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12
10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,
11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.
12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

Our visions and versions of witchcraft include the scary hook-nosed hags riding brooms and black cats and big bubbly cauldrons. Im sure that the witchcraft from the days of Moses was a much different thing. After all you have the most powerful man in the world ( at that time ) with these people in his inner circle. Kind of reminds me of Grima Wormtongue from LOTR. As we draw closer and closer to the end of the age witchcraft will prosper more and more, and it will always start with the children. How many folks actually sit and watch TV with there kids, besides you, which I do commend you on BTW. The TV has become the baby-sitter, and the baby-sitter is more than happy to spoon feed our children the ways and wiles of the devil.

And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify [himself] in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

That's good information Arkanjel, thanks. I'm not well versed in the Bible, especially the Old Testament. (This is something that I am seeking to remedy). I'll definitely give those passages a read.

I've enjoyed and watched many movies and shows that involved witchcraft and other things of that nature in the past. Over the past year or so, I've grown and am taking more seriously my walk with the Lord. Because of this, I'm much more sensitive to and notice more easily the things that are not wholesome for a Christian. It definitely is like my eyes have been opened to many things that I didn't even notice before. It is an amazing experience when you realize that you have been unblinded. It's like crossing a threshold or something. Some movies and such that I would have liked in the past, I have lost a taste for. I actually enjoy watching Power Rangers with my kids but the new one is really bothering me. It's not a show that I can let my kids watch anymore without something telling me that it's wrong.

Daniel 8:27 reads:"...I was astonished at the vision, but none understood [it]. "

I agree that witchcraft exists, but I think your stretching that Daniel quote. When I read the passage I translate it to referring to any craft of war, eg. boats, siege weapons, maybe a vision of modern war machines. To each thier own I guess...

It's been several years since I watched Power Rangers, but I remember the action sequences featuring badly dubbed Japanese "man in tights fighting man in rubber monster costume" footage (which were, of course, what drew my interest). At the time, the show's American footage featured rangers whose color matched classic race and gender stereotypes (Black Ranger was African American, Yellow Ranger was Asian American, Pink Ranger was Caucasian female). How much the show has changed over the last few years, I'm not sure. But even without witchcraft, sorcery, and other elements, I'd still be hesitant to allow my children (when my wife and I have children) to watch the show for one simple reason: mindless consumerism.

Series like Power Rangers, Dragon Ball Z, Gundam, Pokemon, and other Japanese refuse painted American gold are created with merchandising in mind. In the words of Mel Brooks as Yogurt in Spaceballs, "Merchandising, merchandising, where the real money from the movie is made."

The greater threat behind shows like these is not so much the infinitesimal possibility of a child picking up witchcraft from a live action or animated show, but rather the training they receive to grow up and become consumer-oriented.

A child starts out saying, "I have to have that Power Rangers toy." A teenager says, "I have to have the latest designer jeans." An adult says, "I have to have the latest poorly made, gas-guzzling, environment-wrecking American status symbol car." Coincidence? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

I've lived without cable TV since August 2004; before that, I spent maybe two hours a week watching TV, and then usually shows on the Discovery Channel or the History Channel. (Note that I'm not including fansubbed anime in that total.)

I concede that my perspective may not be well-informed. I have no siblings. I don't interact with children on a daily basis. I hope to have children in three or four years, but, God willing, no sooner. I suppose if you have questions about child psychology, I may be the last person you want to ask.

Still, if nothing else, let me reassure you: If you cut the cord on Power Rangers: Mystic Force, your children will not be missing much.

EDIT: Forget Power Rangers. Let's bring back Flying House and Superbook.

I watched Power Rangers: SPD a couple months ago. I'd rather listen to someone scratching a chalkboard for 30 minutes than watch it again. Yes, watching that show was quite painful.

I don't understand...if you are worried about bad impressions being made on your sons, why let them watch Power Rangers at all?

Bad impressions are unavoidable. Therefore we must pick our battles. I have chosen this as one of those battles and am seeking the opinions and guidance of my fellow Christians.
