Popular FPS and RTS games?

So, what are the most popular first-person shooter and real-time strategy games out right now? Please include links to web sites and, if available, a link to download a game demo.

WoW is all well and good, but now that I'm playing WoW like a FPS (focusing mainly on PvP battlegrounds), I might as well put my finger to the pulse of the FPS community. Last memo I got said that CS: Source was overtaking CS 1.6 in terms of popularity. With UT2007 on the horizon, what games, aside from CS 1.6 and CS: S, are most popular?

And as for RTS, well, you all know I have much love for Starcraft and other RTS games. I know about Warhammer 40K and Dawn of War, but what else is popular out there?

cod2 is great, its not ur typical ww2fps where u can take 30 mg bullets to the chest grab a medikit and be good. also, u dont get crosshairs when moving or shooting, best way to aim is to look down the sight which they do rlly well.

wow bringing up the site i see stuff about cod3 O.o. cod2 came out a bit before christman last year alrdy got cod3... http://www.callofduty.com/ is the link to game site. click on Call Of Duty 2, Call Of Duty 2:big red one is platform only version. downloadabe demo on site

I'm starting to wonder if both genres are drying up? Either that or my head is just in other parts of the video game world, but it seems like MMORPG's are the order of the day.

FPS and RTS games have their established giants that stride the earth (more FPS than RTS, I think), your Half-Lives, your Halos, etc. and there isn't a heck of a lot of room for anybody else to get in and make a splash anymore, not with the cost of making one that will compete with the graphics in HL, Doom, etc. You've got Far Cry and such, but did anybody get Prey? Sin: Episodes?

I'm not in the RTS world, so I can't comment there, but aside from Gears of War (which is 3rd person so I guess it doesn't count) and HL:Episode 2 (with Portal and Team Fortress 2), I think that genre is dead. Not dead to innovation, just dead to new comers. The established franchises are just too immovable.

i think right now wc3 is prolly one of the most strongest rts right now, especially with cal backing them up on reg and dota maps

as for fps....... no others are very strong cept cs

  1. World of Warcraft
  2. Counter-Strike Source
  3. Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer
  4. Battlefield 2
  5. Counter-Strike 1.6
  6. Guild Wars
  7. Silkroad Online
  8. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
  9. Warcraft III - The Frozen Throne
  10. Call of Duty Multiplayer

According to Xfire.com, these are the most popular multiplayer games being played as of today.

Battlefield: 2142 will come out next month. Dawn of War has another expansion coming out soon and they are also developing another RTS in the non-40k Warhammer universe.

That's why I'm glad M$ is coming out with XNA. Then, guys without much money can make a splash by releasing their game for others to test. I expect we'll see a lot of guys making games that will be played for a long time to come (like the counterstrike series).

Dota? DOTA? You've got to be kidding me.

Worst... Gametype... Ever...

And I think Halo's pretty big on PC, but I've never played it so I don't know for sure. I have seen some of the mods though, and they are wicked sweet.

dude everyone i know that plays wc3, plays dota, i dunno why but they do. and halo pc isnt as popular as it is on x-box, but its a midgets game anyways.

Thank you all for your input. I'll be taking this information and plotting a course for ToJ's FPS and RTS endeavors in the next few months based on what's been posted here and whatever other information I collect.

Please continue posting on what FPS and RTS games you think are most popular. I'll continue reading it to keep apprised.

Also you should note that a large portion of the gaming population does not use xfire.

what we really need to see is a good space simulation, I miss the good ol days of being able to fly through space and blow up stuff (freelancer FTW!)

Eve Online is interesting but it is too strict I think, I like being able to run rampant killing things and not have to worry about having the entire sector coming down on me.

Imagine crossing a space simulation with grand theft auto, It would be pretty sweet. Or maybe a good real life simulation, even though it sounds strange.

CS:S is my favorite, once you learn the cheap mechanics of the game you are almost invincible. I liked the cod* sp, but the multiplayer turned into whoever can bumrush the area the best, which doesnt make for fun play in my opinion.

I am looking foreward to the new enemy territory, it looks pretty sweet, its based on the quake series story line.

Wine doesn't work (last I heard) and the Xfire plugin for GAIM doesn't have half the features of the actual client.

Tek, the Gamespy Stats might be another helpful barometer to measure these things by, in addition to the XFire stats. Yes, not everyone uses Gamespy, but most servers want themselves listed on Gamespy, so they'll trigger an update to Gamespy to make sure they get listed there, so the number of servers for a particular game is also a good factor to look at it.

Of the top 10, 9 are FPSs (Neverwinter Nights is the only non-FPS), and most are from established Franchises or freebies: Half Life (includes all mods), Battlefield, Call of Duty, Metal of Honour and Unreal Tournament (includes all mods), and the freebies Wolfenstien (ET) and America's Army.

Doom, Quake 4 and Far Cry don't even rank but that might have more to do with how their servers work, but at least one non-giant is in the top 20: F.E.A.R.

I tried looking for All-Seeing Eye stats, but this page is all I could find. Did Yahoo buy ASE?

Yes, unfortunately. -_- I bought a lifetime license a few years back and was rather upset by the news that Y! had purchased my favorite game browser. Oh well. Steam's Favorites windows isn't so bad.

And I glanced at Gamespy Stats the other day. It gave me a fair idea of what games I want to research for new chapters.

Thanks again to everyone who's posted, and please keep those suggestions comin' in! :D

Speaking of Half Life 2, has anyone seen the Goldeneye mod? That has to be the most amazing thing ever. I messed around with it once, then reformatted my computer. What ever happened to it?
