Planetside

Anyone check this game out? It's going to be the first MMOFPS. This will be my next MMOG.

http://planetside.station.sony.com/

With all the craze for MMOG's, this would be a nice break from the spellcasting of Dark Age of Crack and Evercrack, but also take games like Battlefield 1942 to a higher level. And it kinda mixes them together, where people don't just pick up a weapon and shoot other people. You gotta know how to fire the gun first. And you can be a hacker!

They are going to have like 20,000 beta testers.... I applied. I want in!

And supposedly, unless I misread it, there will be the capability of 100,000 user capacity on each server. Can you imagine that?

Will ToJ form a Planetside chapter? Well, it depends on two primary factors:

(1) How popular is the game? Will there be enough Christian gamers interested in forming a guild (or whatever they're called in Planetside) with the proper chain of command and such?

(2) Does Tek get into the beta?

Just kidding about that second point. Heh. But I did sign up for the beta. In fact, Planetside and Star Wars Galaxies are the only reasons I have a Sony Station account.

Personally I still think MMO games are still pretty dumb by and large. Granted this will be the first one to really deviate from the RPG point and click, ala Everquest, to the FPS point and click and click and click hold click and click. I have a hard time seeing myself paying in all likely hood 15 dollars a month for what's looking to be be just another generic shooter with no single player and all the n00bs in the same game at once, versues maybe a half dozen at once now. Outside of being solely online I doubt that it will be anything more then average and I have little doubt that it will make no dent in CS's player count(though it can take all the n00bs it wants ;-) ).

Personally, Mr. Toe, I've never liked CS. I refuse to play it in fact. You will also never see the game at the LAN party I go to every couple weeks. Though it seems to be very popular around this neck of the woods, it isn't as popular as you would think. I play SoF 2 online myself, and find it much more exciting than any other FPS today.

Planetside, however, will be something different. Unlike my SoF and your CS, there will be hundreds shooting at once. Can you imagine what it would look like? The sheer size of the battles? The differences in the units, ranging from ground troops and mech-type soldiers to tanks and flying ships? It'll be insane!

We have a couple FPS chapters, and an MMO chapter. I think this game will fit in with this crowd, I really hope we can make a chapter out of it.

Hey Tek, get a high-speed connect yet? I'm retiring the ol' 56k modem next week...

Well I despise CS to it's very core so I really have no idea why I play it. ;-) Once again though it's the same old same old just on a new scale, with lag of a new scale and whiny n00bs whining about the lag at a newscale and doing dumb things like flashing their team mates and running em over with jeeps. This game could do great and still won't come close to toppling CS in player numbers. Go look at the Gamespy stats for games. At 12:39am on Sunday CS has 81131 players currently, while the next 19 most popular games are barely over half of that. CS isn't going to go away for quite a while. Now we come back to simply the design of Planetside. Ok it can have a whole bunch of people in the world at the same time, we've been over that and that's it's most distinguishing feature so far. I've seen nothing from a design/gameplay perspective that sets this game apart from all the others out there and without that element there's not a whole lot to draw people from other games, especially to one that much like it's straight up rpg brethren asks for alot of time to get to do the best stuff. Taking something that's uber popular in the game scene and making it MMO does not make it a good game as The Sims Online illustrates. By the way can you imagine how much bandwith, and how much sheer computing power it will take for these epic battles? The majority of people out there do not have beastly computers which will drive tons from this game, and even those with broadband will lose the precision required to fly the ships and aim as the battles grow in size. I won't be surprised if this turns into another Motor City Online.

I really am the last modemer. :'(

Then suggest new chapters. -_-

There's much more to Tribe of Judah than our Counter-Strike sub-chapter but others won't grow until we have a proper staff and active gamers in place.

Personally, I'm very much looking forward to Planetside. I have seen the rude, the crude, and the elitists of both the FPS and MMORPG gaming communities but I think sometimes some forget that I formed ToJ to provide a community free from such drudgery. If we were to form a Planetside chapter, then there would be at least one haven of respect, character, and sportsmanlike behavior.

We'll still game with you, toe!

And don't forget, there are still plenty of games out there that don't give a ridiculous advantage to broadband users--Starcraft, Warcraft III, and Tetrinet 2 to name a few. Tetrinet 2 is even free!

Behavior towards each other... still trash talk the others right?

I ownz joo!

Well I won't even go into how I pwn everyone cept for the uber n00bs, like Goose and Xel and what not, so I must be like CPL material in a no lag enviroment. ;-)

If I had a host to store my images, I'd show you my latest ownage on SoF 2. Game started, and I went on a 10-kill slaughter before I was felled. Ended the game with a 15/2 record. Beats my old 9-kill streak record. Working on 11/0 now.

Hmm yes icky U of M Wolverines colors. :-P Though that doesn't make your opposition to them any clearer, or why you have to choose one of them?

Well, I choose NC just because their whole thing is about freedom. So I'll be the guy with the blue on half my face screaming "FREEDOM!" while shooting down everyone on the other team.
