Overheating Powersupply?

Okay, the last couple days, I have had a million bags of crap thrown at me, and on top of it all, my computer has been freezing up and then my PS fan spinning so fast it sounds like a jet taking off. It just sits there doing that with my computer frozen... Then after a minute, the smell of burning something... I am assuming it is my PS overheating, I was wondering if this is what it is, and us there any free fix, because me and my wife have lost our jobs, and bills are here with no money...lol...

hmm, is it windows locking up? Usually power supply problems cause reboots.

It may be that the PS is overstressed. I would open up the computer and get rid of the dust bunnies and double check that all fans are working and the heatsinks are mounted properly.

One word: PC power and cooling...ok that was three words but you get the point.

semi un-related in dealing with the PSU in a context such as this.

More or less i had one a PSU making grinding noise for bout 6 months, when i hit the top of it, it would stop so i lived with it. eventually burned out my socket A cpu though

Really? It got burned out...

I whack my PC when it does the grinding noise, occasionally.

yeah thats basically what i found it to be in the end.

Okay, a new development...it is not the PS, it is the CPU fan that has been speeding up like crazy...but, idk...I tried getting the CPU to overheat, but I couldn't get it to, it only does it, now, when I am not doing anything...

do memtest on ur ram then and see what happens, also check speed fans SMART thing for health of ur hard drive

that should also allow you to get the temperature of some of the components. Also check if your northbridge has a fan, a lot of people never check that.
