Operating System question

I am currently using Windows 8 Release Preview 64-bit
it will not show my DVD R-RW drive in the menu or allow me to watch/burn DVD's.
the drive does lite up when a disc is put in it and i can run CD's that are pre-burned (not DVD's)

QUESTION: Is there any free 64-bit OS's than can run guild Wars 2
and wont wreak havoc on my basic functions like DVD capabilities ?

Thinking one of two issues.

* Power cable plugged in, SATA not. That would create the problem you're describing; DVD spinning up but not in Windows. Could also be a bad SATA cable or port.
* Drivers just not installed - you could correct this by right clicking my computer -> manage -> device manager

I've never seen an OS missing drivers for a dvd player, though. Could be a weird Win8 bug, but I'd check the SATA cable.

all plugs are in place and i can run regular Music CD's or a Data CD such as a web cam driver disc etc..)
the LED lights up when i first close disc tray so i know it has power going to the drive

it only seems to be DVD's that wont play or burn.

i can deal with it not showing up in the menu as long as it works when i put a disc in.

also appears to be a huge issue on microsoft support forums so im not alone lol

it is inconvenient to fire up my laptop just to watch/burn a DVD

Ah, sorry, missed the detail about it playing pre-burned DVDs. Have you downloaded the latest (probably Win7) drivers from the manufacturer?
