Today Blizzard has posted a warning about some new NVidia drivers. Apparently they can cause your card to fry when using 3d games. See this post for details.

You are most at risk if you play Warcraft 3, WoW, or Starcraft 2 beta. But those are all Blizzard games, you may find that they cause issues for other company's games as well.

The issue was that there auto fan speed system has been broken for some time, frying cards early anyways...and they tried to fix it...and failed...but if you control you fan speed manually (which you should be doing anyways since the auto fan doesn't work right now), you are safe, even with the new driver...

Um, is this for the March 2nd, 2010 drivers? Been using that for Bad Company 2, GPU is running fine though. Or does this only affect Blizzard games?

(Not gonna matter in the next few days, 5850 in the mail. xD)
 
It is not game specific. The driver (196.75) fails at handling the fan speeds to dissipate heat. They have already updated it, 196.75 is no longer downloadable.

I may be switching soon. Engadget had a recent article on how the new breed of NVidia cards either don't or barely exceed (I don't remember which) the performance of ATI's current top of the line card. Kind of lame...plus they got me royally miffed with their whole Vista scam a while back.
