Ok, so as much as I'd like an Alienware notebook their a little out of practical ability to convince people to buy for me. Then there's the titanium Powerbooks from Apple which are not only expensive out the wazoo, but even les practical.

I've been looking at this notebook, and for the price and all it seems pretty ok. The 64MB GeForce FX Go5200 is pretty good for a thin light little notebook in this range, when most of em have integrated graphics or the 32MB Mobility 9000 at best(consider even the Alienware Sentias, their Centrino notebook, only comes with the Mobility 9000). Obviously it won't be a gaming powerhouse but it'd be mostly for school work and would be able to handle CS, WC3, etc. The screen, which is a widescreen 15.2 inch, was remarked upon for it's brightness and quality. Something that's always good in a laptop but usually lacking in cheaper ones.
I've had a pretty mistrustful view of "value" companies, but that's really starting to change as some truly good ones come along. BFG is a great example of this, and I'm thourghly pleased with their products. WinBook seems to be another company that could be ok, as the review or two I found thought pretty highly of the products in question. They seem better then HP, or Compaq which are my benchmark for horrible computer companies. So any thoughts, comments, etc?

Hmm, think there's a new replacement for my esteem of Alienware notebooks.  Check this out.  17" wide screen, and way less then a comparably equiped Alienware.  Best of all Cnet gave it an 8.5(I think, it's something in the 8's though), with their drawbacks being weight(9.5lbs, less then Alienware's), and 90 minute battery life(comparable to Alienware's).  This is absolutly scrumpteous.

*Edit* Did I mention that it has a built in subwoofer?

i've never had much good to say about laptops in general man...
the batteries never seem to last long, and every different laptop maker seems to add their own drawbacks to buying their laptops

i do want a laptop, so long as i'm near a power source, i can at least carry information with me at all times, and heck, at school, everywhere i turn has an ethernet hub, plus if i got a wireless card, the library has set up wifi. but i do NOT want to buy a dell or anything like that. i can never get the specifications right with computer companies...my computers wind up lagging within the week i get them...because i overuse them and the hardware is NOT at the power i want them to be. so i really wanna do is build my own. however, i cannot find a laptop shell ANYWHERE! i keep looking...but there is nothing! if ANYONE knows where i can get a laptop shell so that i can start to work on my dream notebook...let me know!

Highly doubtful you'll be able to find one for one simple reason. Almost everything with laptops has some degree of being proprietary to it's maker about it. Yea that's changing, but slowly and there's almost no way you'll find the parts for less then you'd pay for a pre-built laptop of the same specs. The cases by the way are the most proprietary part of all, each being made to the specifications of what they'll include. You'd really be better off making a real computer using a shuttle case, and carrying around a 15" lcd. No battery power but wouldn't cost you more money then is worth it.

Yea, it'd be pretty sweet if you could though. Always love crushing a dream though.

One of these days though, it might just be reborn. Or maybe even championed by a dreamer like you.

It's getting a lot closer, Toaster. One of the local PC companies here in Boise sells laptop cases with keyboards and LCDs (15" or 17"). You then can select from different motherboards and graphics options, then pick your CPU and RAM. A lot of this you get to build on your own, but I recommend letting them install the mobo and graphics subsystem as there is grounding issues with laptops. However, you get to pull it apart and play with it as much as you want. w00t! If you want a good prebuild, I would go with a Toshiba or HP with the 10 key, although to get the higher end graphics and sound you will end up with a "desktop replacement" instead of a portable laptop.

Well maybe I'm misunderstanding, but that doesn't seem to be all too different then what almost every companie does now. Just your doing all the work, lol. I don't know the whole can't build your own laptop thing never bothered me too much. *shrug*
Now someone acctually tell me what they think a good notebook for ~$2000 or less is!!!

This thread seems kind of dead... my advice to you is to try registering an account at gotfrag and asking the people there... my friend did that and got quite a bit of response.
