NEW SCAM!!!!

There is a new scam. People are trading armbraces or other high end items and getting ripped off. For example, you'll trade 50 ectos for 1 Armbrace. The trade appears normal, you hit accept, the scammer hits accept and you suddenly see that you've traded 50 ectos for 1 wood plank.

I don't know how the scam happens, and I wouldn't post details if I did, but it requires you to accept a guest invite to the scammer's GH and conduct the trade there. The trade appears to go thru normally, but when your guest invite is cancelled and you are kicked from the hall, the "armbrace" reverts to it's true wood plank form.

DO NOT TRADE IN A GUILD HALL UNTIL THIS IS FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DO NOT TRADE IN A GUILD HALL UNTIL THIS IS FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

don't do trades in a guld hall that isn't yours or an affialiates. The red flag for anyone should have been..guest invite...that's usually how any scammer gets you..

I have not heard anything official from Arena net about this. They are aware of the problem and I'm surprised that it wasn't fixed immediately. They are usually quick to jump on stuff like this.

Again, do not trade in a foreign guild hall. Trading within an alliance guild hall is perfectly safe as there is no guest invite involved.

I will disagree with Hescomingsoon on 1 point though. This would not have raised a red flag for me. High end traders regularly do guild invites for trading. Trading in a gh adds a level of privacy and decorum that you can't get in the hustle and bustle of Kamadan. Forum trades can also cause guest invites rather than trying to find a common town to meet up in. Yes, I know there is the Great Temple, but a lot of folks just don't think about it.

And always as a rule of thumb, check. And don't just glance at the items/gold, move your mouse over it and make sure it is ecto, or an armbrace, or whatever. There are a lot of things with the same skin, so make sure the quantity is correct as well as the quality.

Good advice, STC. Many scammers rely on people not looking carefully enough and they'll say things like "please hurry, mom's calling me to dinner" "Gotta go...please be fast!"

Unfortunately in this case, that won't help and it's the reason this scam is so bad. The trade window looks correct. If you are trading a minipet or 50 ectos for 1 armbrace, you will see an armbrace in the trade window. If you mouse over it, you will see 1 armbrace text. It's not until you complete the trade and are kicked from the guild hall that you see 1 wood plank in your inventory and not an armbrace.

I don't know how the scam works. It probably involves some 3rd party hack, but I know it has to do with corrupted data and the fact that wood plank has an item id of 0 behind the scenes.

It's kind of like real life - don't make deals with strangers in strange places.

I'd like to know how they do it though - if anyone figures it out.

thanks bunches to STC and Raven. very interesting. hehe, i have not been on GW for a while and have a q' yet i didnt think it required a new thread. if any one reads this, which i doubt if that happens, does any one know how much a golden Veresh Ossa mini goes for?

Verish is a pretty common mini, its actually Green iirc. Its in the Nightfall Collectors edition. There is on on guru, dedicated, going for 15k. Dedicated going for 7k. Which actually isn't all that bad.

If you don't know what Dedication is, here is the link for the Wiki definition.

I heard of another scam recently where destroyer cores are used in trades and called by other high end material names as they look the same.
