Frankly folks...Abba communications deals can't be beat...the man is a strong Christian and everyone here can see for themselves the reliability of his setup. The sticking point has been he's on the left coast and toj wanted something in the center of the us due to wanting to save 10-80 milliseconds in pings. The costs for doing so have been repeatedly shown to be substantial and unaffordable for toj. Either buy your own box(which i ahve specced out TWICE) or talk to robert at abbacomm about what is need and rent one form him. either way the price can't be touched and a small latency penalty is going to be worth it. I have never gotten more than 125 in the testing we have done(although my Comcast connection has been weird as of late). Also i used to run the gfc CS and CS:S server out of my house on a DSL connection. Even then I had folks coming from the "left coast" as well even though they were sometimes seeing north of 200 milliseconds. Ping isn't everything..we had a great server and the fact that it would fill up and stay way even with much less bandwidth proves this. So either TOJ is going to have to save up another 2k to cover the substantial hosting costs for the ability to save less than 90 milliseconds or go with a provider that has reliably served the CGA and it's affiliates for more than 3 years.
 
What are his prices? I am curious.

EDIT: Just speed tested in that area, I get 108 ping. And I'm probably farther away than most people in the clan.

So yea... If I get 108... I'm guessing everyone else should get between 20-107 :P

EDIT2: In case your wondering, I live 3,000 miles away from his P.O. Box address.

EDIT3: It is a bit inconvenient to have a server located in Washington. It just seems that a game server should be hosted centrally. Servers in Dallas seem to be more popular....

you'd have to requote..:) however the machine that host this site and the cga ts server is a rented machine(dual p-4 box right now IIRC). It's 395/year i think(see tek's colocation donation thread). I have admin access to a server there for 50/month with a 10 meg unmetered port. Unmetered means it's 10 megabits/sec with no transfer limit(aka no terabyte limit). Inconvenient? If there is a problem you can use the built in ILO(remote console) that can be accessed even if the mahcine is off. If there is a hardware problem you co-ordinate with robert and he'll let hte thech in to fix it. You don't need to be there...it's not going to be any less "convenient" to have it in dallas or chicago. If you read this entire thread an unmetered port is going to cost 50-100/month..period. Also, look at the costs. 150-300 month for anything in the central US. 50/month or so for a Christian based colo that's been reliable and rock stable for more than 3 years. Can you really justify 2-3 times the cost for 80 milliseconds?

this "machine" is a vps running at 500 mhz on a 1 megabit virtual connection. It hosts 3 websites across 5 domains(gfc's main website and two of mine). It's one of hte vps's i offer from my website eccmd.com. The host box is an 8 core beastie owned by a friend of mine..I just do the day-to-day- management. It's got dual redundant power, and a 10 megabit burstable to 100 megabit unmetered port. I don't remember the exact number but it's south of 150/month.

There's another physical box there that i admin as well in the same rack. this box is a 1u unit with a dedicated 10 megabit unmetered port for 50/month.

Keep in mind that even tho our own server would be great, lets make sure we do the math. Untill our gameservers.com rental and our web hosting fees exceed the cost of owning/renting a server I vote we keep our current arrangement.
 
Captain Tea, we would get a dedicated box so we could host more for less $$. If we add more game server rentals from gameservers.com that means more $$ for the clan to have to give up.

I understand that, I just don't think it wise to make the move till we reach the point where it would be economically beneficial. Hardware is obsolete the moment you buy it so we'll get more mileage from a server if we wait till that time when the cost benefit ratio makes good sense. Lets make double sure that we need our own dedicated server because it makes sense from a financial standpoint and we're not just getting one for the sake of having one. That's all i'm saying. I just want us to get the most from our ToJ funds.

Don't forget as well that our own dedicated hardware might not be one size fits all. Games like UT3 are extremely ping sensitive. The location and bandwidth are crucial. Laggy server = noone will use it. So depending on where it is not all of the games we have servers for will be able to be run on it.

I just want you guys to prayerfully consider these things as you get quotes. Our own server will rock out loud when it is the right setup and at the right time :cool:.

if you try to buy hte pings 80 milliseconds is going to cost you 2-3x more than what cga is paying now. I've run full servers (cs and cs:s) out of my house off a dsl line. Pings got high for folks who weren't nearby..they came anyway. Pings aren't everything and the sooner folks quit obsessing over that the sooner toj as a community can move forward. Also you're thinking US only..you get a good server and you WILL get overseas users. We did..often. At that point being in the central us is a disadvantage..not an advantage.

I dunno about it now. I think 200-250 on a server seems to be unrealistic currently. Maybe we should ask about 150. Funny thing is I have seen dedicated server rentals that say 300 clients should connect to it at the same time for $350-$400. But these are from people like gameservers, therefore it is managed by them.
 
With what I'm being told, Art of War Central doesn't seem to be a bad deal :P


EDIT: In fact, Art Of War central actually appears to be one of the ways to go if we rent. Their most expensive server is about $400 a month with a good config done to it... That's the one that's supposed to hold 1000 clients at the same time...

If you ever played UT with 80+ ping you'd understand why people won't stay long because you can't hit anything. For UT a ping of 80+ is nearing the point of unplayable. UT is a lot more fast paced than counterstrike or CoD. You guys do what you want, but its like I said, a central dedicated server isn't one size fits all. If we get a server and my ping is over 70 I'll go back to renting one myself if I have to, like I did for many years here at ToJ.

EDIT: I'll butt out now before I get another fight going. ;)

It looks like we may be spending between $150 and $300 each month if we go the dedicated server hosting route.

Dedicated server hosting may be safer than purchasing the server, having it shipped to the datacenter we select, and selecting a colocation plan. If anything happens to the server in a colocation situation, we probably won't have anyone who can handle the physical hardware directly. On the other hand, we can probably get beefier hardware if we buy the server ourselves. There are advantages and disadvantages to both scenarios.
 
I was talking with one of the guys on the webhostingtalk forums, and he made some good points as to why renting can be better. First, it won't be managed if we build it, so we have to do everything ourselves. Second thing is if we don't have a warranty for one piece, and it breaks....

Choosing a dedicated server setup over a colocation setup is definitely safer. I'm trying to balance security (What if something goes wrong?) with long-term growth (If we buy server hardware with an 8-core CPU and 8GB RAM, we're going to be able to run quite a few servers). It's a difficult decision and the unknown factors heavily.

The topic (dedicated server hosting vs. purchased hardware + colocation) has been discussed in the Staff Forum before, but maybe it's time we take it to the General Discussion forum as we're starting to gain some momentum on this project.

that's why you buy form dell or hp where they cover EVERYTHING in the server. Also if you don't have root access(and you won't in a managed box) you most likely will hit issues with system configs not being able to be properly setup to run some game servers and possible even other servers. Also on a colo'ed box you control what content can be put on the box..with some managed providers they can be very strict about what you can and cannot put on the machine.
