Seems like free-to-play is all people are doing these days. EA put out Need for Speed World a while back under an F2P model.
I downloaded it now that I have a machine that can... y'know... run it. To my surprise, I'm having a bit of fun with it. Just hit level five; now I can buy new cars (like a classic Charger !woot!).
So far, it looks like most of the useful stuff can be bought with in-game money. You can speed up your acquisitions using real cash, but... I'm cheap (and like the whole working my way up the ladder thing anyway).
Netcode isn't perfect, but I think the part where I'm quite possibly playing international players (I see English comments in chat once in every twenty messages
) may have something to do with that. Overall, it maintains the speed (lol) and feel of Need for Speed... but brings in the leveling/grinding elements of an MMO.
And, of course, you can play against other people instead of just the AI (though AI races are an option). That's always nice.
