Need a gaming laptop ASAP

Yeah, I know "gaming laptop" is an oxymoron, but still. I'm currently running with a phaddy dekstop case filled with an AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black, 4 gigs of RAM, and using an ATI Radeon 5850. I'm looking for a laptop with roughly the same specs that I can bring with me to college dorms or to the library on campus (and to friday night LAN games ;)). I'm willing to pay around $1300 or so for it, shipping isn't that big of a deal. My only request is that the GPU remain an ATI brand, it's just so beefy. :p

I was going to get this one, but I it keeps selling out. :/

My first option was this one, but I dunno, just not feeling it.

I don't care about looks (barring vomit pink or girly purple colors) as long as it runs well and at a reasonable temperature.

Games I'll be playing mostly:

Bad Company 2
Supreme Commander 2
Team Fortress 2
COD: Black Ops
Dragon Age: Origins
Guild Wars

If you guys see any good deals or bought a great one yourself, please post a link to it? Thanks in advance. ^__^)_b

My best friend got an Asus 17" for LAN parties for $1,000 at BestBuy back in the summer and has had no problems with it. Plays games very nice and I dig the variably lit keyboard in low light situations, very sweet!

I LOL'd when I saw Amazon's sale price on the G73. Save one penny! If you want an Asus G73 and don't want to wait for restock on the refurbished, go here:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+...243761956&skuId=1257894&st=asus g73&cp=1&lp=1

That's what I'm rockin'. A few things of note in comparison to the one you linked:
* 1.73Ghz processor versus 1.6
* The BST7 has 1333MHz memory in it, versus the 1066 in the X3. (Note: BB lists BST7 @ 1066, I even verified with tech, but it IS 1333 as I had heard reported before asking). The 6gb vs 8gb isn't an issue but you can easily add a slot
* 5400 RPM hard drive in the BST7. I'd recommend using the money saved to get a new hard drive, which will give you better performance than any normal 7200 and you can throw the 640GB 5400 into an enclosure like I did.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003NSBF32/ <--- hybrid SSD drive, and it's super fast.
Edit: can't tell on Amazon, but I'd bet the X3 has a 5400rpm drive too from looking at the product listing.

It's VERY easy to swap the drive on the G73...in fact, you could keep both drives in if you wanted because there are two slots.

Wow... 13.6 lbs is heavy! But it is a gaming laptop...

Looks shiny!

There's that word again! Funny how BB lists the BST7 @ 8.5 pounds. Must be something wrong with the gravitational pull for the X3.

One of the reasons I went with the ASUS G73JW-A1 (Nvida card) is the ASUS G73JH (ATI) had big driver issues when it came out so it was overheating. Now mind you they say its been fixed and Ryan if you have the JH you can speak to that. [edit] - looks like it was a real issue but a VBIOS update from asus that fixed it]

One other note, there are also some other differences too, not sure if its the same in the US (would think so) but in Canada the G73JH-B1 (ATI) and the G73JW-A1 (Nvida) both come with a 2 year warrenty and a 1 year accidental protection (IE: you drop it, spill a drink on it, etc and its covered) which is nice, everything else is one year standard warrenty.

Weight wise it is 8.5 pounds, or my G73JW-A1 is 8.5 pounds anyway and thats with battery in. Either way its a great design and I think any in the G73 series are great notebooks and should serve you well :)

Yup, the GSOD (gray screen of death) was a driver issue. Speaking of heat - one thing I didn't mention that is a plus for the G73 that I'm sure you can attest to:
THIS LAPTOP RUNS SO COOL!

I wouldn't have my old laptop on my lap out of literal fear of damage to myself. This puppy is almost cool to the touch even after hours of pwning noobs due to the awesome ventilation system. It's a great design.

Man, you guys have me rethinking of making my next gaming rig a desktop. Well, you guys and the 46" HDTV in the living room.

Erm, come to think of it, I think a mid-range laptop would suffice. Considering the cost of dorm living ($1900 for food, $1800 for rent), I'll just bring my fat desktop and lug around a much cheaper ($500-700) laptop for typing and gaming on medium graphics. Or just go with a netbook. :p

Looking at: this one
And: this one

The ASUS has better GPU options, but the Toshiba has a bigger screen, HDD, and a triple CPU. @_@

Odd, this laptop is all the above...

Though, Toshiba Qosmio is known to be a Gaming Laptop.

The 2nd slighter higher one uses a GTX 460M; 1.5GB GDDR5 Video Card.

I was at school, they were gobbled up in four hours. :(

I decided to just pick up something similar to a L650 that was on sale here at the store for $500. It can run games, and the keyboard is very nice, so instead of a $300 netbook, I added $200 more bucks and got something that will fit my needs. Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. ^__^)_b
