My thoughts on

Some of you may already know that I am a beta-tester for Star Wars Galaxies. One of the ToJ members came to me asking about it and asked if there was going to be a chapter for it. This took me by surprise, as, I have not heard a single word from anyone hear about it. Here are my thoughts about the game, now that the NDA has been lifted:

I was very excited to pla...test it, and it was well worth it. I was addicted for the past 3 weeks, despite the many bugs still in the game. The graphics are GORGEOUS, and the cities, country-side, and planets are HUGE. You could run for hours.

Advantages: If you like Star Wars, you should definitely try out this game, and "live" the Star Wars life. It definitely has the Star Wars feel to it. You will be able to see such characters such as Darth Vader, the Emperor, R2-D2 and C-3PO. Hang out with Han Solo and Chewbacca in the Mos Eisley Cantina. You can even try your chance at becoming a Jedi! (although, I hear it's rather difficult to accomplish...)

Disadvantages: A minor one is the fact the game can get tedious and boring if doing missions by yourself and playing solo. Groups of well-known friends can solve this problem. The biggest is cost: $15 per month if paying monthly, or $12 per month if paying/subscribing yearly. You do the math. Also, the actual game costs are $50 and $80 for the standard edition and collector's edition respectively. If you ask me, both are pretty pricy. I decided to go ahead and cancel my collector's edition pre-order and do something better with the $80 I would have spent, not to mention the monthly cost. I can always buy it and play it when I win the lottery!

From what some people have been saying the game is turning out descent but it still has lots of bugs that will not be fixed as of the 26th. If I ever get this game it will be after the first six months and prolly after they implement vehicles and space expansion. If you buy this game the first day you are basicly paying for a beta test in my oppinion but if you realy like Star Wars or MMORPG it could be worth it.

I HATE NERFED JEDI AND CLONING!!! And I'm 33mhz under the requirements and cant overclock with my jumperless motherboard

You're right Exo, they skipped open-beta and are making money off the people who think the game is in a phase to actually play it. None do they know that they are paying to open beta test!

I keep going back and forth on the game...I really want to play it, but don't want to pay for it monthly...

I want no game i cant hax first and buy later...

Paying monthly is from the devil. Though i guess we pay monthly to play CS so its all swings and roundabouts....

I'll make my 1337 mmo comment now.

First about the fee. For those that do not know, SWG will have the highest monthly fee of all current mmo's. But to play an mmo it is something you have to deal with. The fees are for server upkeep and to keep the game fresh by adding new content.

Now I'll comment about SWG. To elite: I assume this is your first venture into an mmorpg. You say with enthusiasm that the world's are huge and you can run for hours. Most all mmorpgs are like this. Trust me, after playing one for two years you know where everything is. There is no more excitement in running for hours and hoping to discover some new area. You will know where everything is and you will not want to spend forever trying to get to it.

SWG's crafting procedure also boggles me. To get something crafted you have to go through a couple different people, i.e. Designer, Manufacturer, etc. To me, this sounds more time consuming than it needs to be. I personally have played DAOC (another mmo) for two years and still play it more than anything else. (I actually only play it and CS now :P) In SWG your Uber Blaster has to go through a couple people before it's in your hands. We all know what happens to prices when it goes through a couple of people to get to you in the real world. In DAOC, one person can create your Two Handed Axe of Pwnage. That system seems so much more user-friendly to me.

Finally the biggest drawback for me is SWG's pvp. PvP is a staple of my mmo experience. While being able to compete against 15 people may give you a rush in CS. Think about competing against 500 people (albeit not all at once) in an mmo. SWG's pvp is lackluster at best. The PvP is meaningless. You can join in a faction battleground-like area and duke it out with others, but you'll go down fast. You can hunt imperials as a rebel and vice versa, but there is no reward. DAoC is the most pvp based of the mmorpgs. (Don't anyone say PS is because it isnt an rpg) You play for your realm. There is something to have pride in. And your life and realm's life hangs in the balance of others. Everyone does not run of solo trying to rack up the kills. (assassins do, but they are special :P)

And so, being a huge star wars fan, I was looking forward to SWG when I first got wind of it. After following it's beta, I've decided not to switch. Verant does not have the best fan "appreciation." They removed some features of the game midway through beta that are "to be added later." The crafting and pvp kills me. And one big thing. The game has many arbitrary class/skill sets. Being a medic for instance is necessary but how many people want to sit in the hospital and heal as their idea of fun. Yes they can go out in the field, but their services will be needed more at the hospital. And entertainers are necessary group members out in the field. Most people that are hardcore mmorpg'ers will fund a second account to run an entertainer afk. It's done in every mmo. In DAOC they are buffbots. Yes, I have one

.

If your heart is still set on SWG, be patient. Wait 3-6 months before you get into it. Follow the game's patching process and read a few message boards to see the current general consensus. When you feel the game is well enough along to play and you feel like you will not be paying for an open beta, jump in, have fun, and you'll probably get addicted. For me, I'll still be in DAOC, waiting for everyone addicted to pvp comeback from SWG. For those that like the rush of having your skill > than someone else's SWG is not the next best thing.

Now I must go back into hiding, any MMO questions can be directed to me

.\I'll still be in DAOC
I take it Dark age of camelot is the only mmorpg youve played. Wow, your vast and varied mmorpg experience must really make you a mmorpg expert. Excuse me while I ignore all the flaws and exagerations in your comment, oh expert.

You should do the smart thing and stick to insulting the prequels, real warsers might kill you on sight.

Well, I just picked up the collectors edition 5 minutes ago...woohoo. I have been following alot of the beta posts for the last few months, and for the most part, this game is right up my alley.

Iv'e played EQ and AO, albeit not for very long, but i soon got bored of the whole routine: kill, camp, kill, camp, run, kill, camp...

But SWG is trying to change that whole style of play by allowing its players to gain experience thru other types of endeavors. Craft a blaster, design a house to live in, be a bartender, start a band...the list is endless. Plus, with the expansions they are planning (ie the space expansion), this will be a breakthrough in MMORPG games. Run around on a planet for awhile, then get on your ship and go fly around the galaxies blasting TIE fighers...cool.

As with any game, it all boils down to what interests you. If your a complete Star Wars nut, like me, go buy it and try it out. If your a more cautious consumer...read the fansites and forums and get the jist of the feelings of the players.

Anyway, if anyone decides to get this game and wants to start grouping or something, maybe we could start our own section in the ToJ forums so that we can coordinate our efforts, help each other out, and so on.

Well, since i have SWG in hand, you will probably not see me much anymore on the ToJ server. Have fun, gg, God Bless.

Godspeed

Wow shark, that might be the nicest thing you've ever posted...

I compared it to daoc because currently, it is the best thing out there. Yes, I have played them all. Some of them only w/ the free month because they were horrible. SB and AO. It has flaws, but I was not hear to point them out. This was about SWG being the next best thing so I compared it to the current best thing.

I said I was a huge star wars fan. But this game doesnt do it for me. Knights of the old republic is what I'm looking forward to. Your sarcasm is duely noted and I found it neither funny or a contribution to this post.

I've decided AGAIN, to purchase the SWG:CE...I can't pass this opportunity up. If I don't like it, I can always cancel...but I don't want to "wonder" what I am missing when they start to really offer some cool stuff. Jedi Master here I come!

From what im reading around if you bought it today i feel sorry for you. They are currently having problems with there log in servers and no one can get on (duh its soe).

I would think after 3 or 4 mmo games from them they could have a desent release. Am i wrong or was DAOC the only one with a succesfull launch?

Edit: you mean cause your 33mhz under the min you cant run the game? Ive played plenty of games that require more then I have just turn some settings down or configure your computer better.

I dont' think it's a waste...it's just part of technology. Anyways, I am up and running...

If any of you decide to get it soon, then let me know we can hook up and start some missions together.

The following are the three most sensitive topics on any given gaming forum:

1. Religion.
2. Politics.
3. The cost-benefit analysis of playing MMORPGs.

Having played Dark Age of Camelot, I can honestly say that I'm glad to have played a MMORPG but am just as glad to have stopped. I can't afford the time to play Starcraft most of the time now, so DAoC is right out.

Still, DAoC is the standard, and every MMORPG will have its flaws.

Oh, and in closing, please show some manners while posting on the forums.

Howdy,
I'm running an Intel Cellaron 900mhz w/ 544mb RAM, and StarWars Galaxies DOES run, however it is a bit slow and laggy.
So if you're desperate to play it, (whistles a little tune) you CAN run it on a less than 933mhz PC, be warned that it might not be the best experiance tho.

Anyhow, I just wanted to ask if anyone from CGA or ToJ is playing Star Wars: Galaxies, I play on the Flurry and Bria servers.  But mostly on the Flurry server.

I'm looking for people to hang out w/ in game, best time to find me is after 11pm eastern time, or later.  I work 3rd shift, so I spend my nights off gaming.
I also play EverQuest, which is what I play the most often.  I have StarCraft: Brood War, Half Life (don't play it online really), and a lot of other games, mostly RPG or strategy.

Tianar, 52nd druid in EverQuest, Bristlebane server.

Sandar, soon to be droid engineer in Star Wars: Galaxies, Flurry server.

Hi Tianar,

I play SWG religiously, when I'm not playing CS. I am a Scout/Marksman in the Eclipse Galaxy, on the planet Tattooine, city of Mos Espa.

My in game name is 'Kaiine Kloudstriker'. I have not created any other characters yet, as I have been concentrating on my current one.

If you're interested, I know only 2 other members who play SWG; Godspeed, and Creshinibon.

Hit us up sometime...although I never see Creshinibon around.

Elite aka Kaiine Kloudstriker
