My Hard drive freeze up problem

When windows xp freezes then my hard drive light stays on and I
can't move my mouse.

What do you suggest I do?

run scandisk with a surface check on that hard disk. this sounds like a hardware issue with your hard disk.

Also check for dust and crud on your internal fans and heatsinks.

If it is something on your heatsink or fan make sure that you use a Compressed can of air, rubbing a paper towel or other things will not work as well.

We just rescued my buddys computer this weekend with Knoppix. Booted off the ISO and it recognized a USB memory stick that we used to transfer his files off the hard drive. Reformat and reinstall , viola!

<3 knoppix, the ubuntu and slaxware cd's are pretty good too

I did a surface scan with HD tune version 2.54 and it found
a damaged block on my 320 Gig IDE Seagate and when it started
scanning the hard drive scanning speed was about 65meg a second
and close to the botton of the surface scan it went to 3.2megs a
second and since then it takes a long time to boot up windows
and it's 3.2 megs a second now.

Its been making a mechanical funny noise sometimes.

I think my 320 gig hard drive is sick.

:( did you have the data backed up?

I would stop using your machine. Go out and buy a second hard drive and install windows on it. Then copy over data from your old disk as it only has a few days left.

I'll probably be getting a new PCI express motherboard with
some other computer bits that are compatible and get vista

Most likely getting a sata or sata 2 Hard drive.

I've taken out the 320 gig and put in my old 40 gig ide hitachi
and installed Windows XP Home on it and got things sorted out.

Shame about the 320 Gig IDE Seagate malfunctioning. :(

Hdtune program told me in the past that 320 Gig ide Seagate
Spin retry count is Yellow.

I used the HD tune to have a look at the health of the 40 Gig and no Yellow.

Don't think I'll be getting any more seagate drives in the future.

there's nothing wrong with seagate. They are actually the best drives on the market in terms of reliability and warranty protection. Goto seagate's site and check on the warranty of your drive..you might be able to get a replacement for nothing. Seagate is the only hard drive manufacturer that puts a 5 year warranty across all of their drives.
