MOTHER 3 (Earthbound 2) fan translation

I don't know how this escaped my attention, but yesterday, but the highly anticipated fan translation of MOTHER 3 (better known to North American and European gamers as Earthbound 2) is complete and available for download.

Downloading the fan translation is the easy part. The hard part will be getting your hands on a copy of MOTHER 3. You might try eBay. Unfortunately, Play Asia is out of stock right now.

Earthbound is one of my favorite games of all time so I've been waiting for this eagerly. Just started last night and it is great but definitely a much more depressing and somber game.

Does MOTHER 3 require having played through Earthbound to get the full impact of the story or will the game stand alone?

I only played for a few hours so far but I didn't see any direct connections to the previous games other then the style of art and humor. From the reviews I have read later there are some connections but you would probably still enjoy it.

I beat Mother 3 tonight and it was amazing. I'm not sure if I liked it more than Earthbound but it was definitely in the same ball park. Probably the best game I've played this year so much emotion and story all done with little 2d sprites while the greatest graphics on the pc fall short. It does start a little slow but once I got into it I nearly played to the end without stopping.

To answer your question if you need to play Earthbound I wouldn't really call this a sequel to that game. It's more like the Final Fantasy sequels. The combat system and art and style are nearly identical but the story has but a few strands connecting it together. A few characters from the previous games appear (only one of any importance). I would still recommend playing through Earthbound because it was also an amazing game.
