MoP clarification.

I dunno, it seems to be the race itself from what I mostly see on the rage threads. The idea of a joke race now being the focus of a xpac is the most common complaint. What do you think is the real complaint?

That being said, that image is great, and personally I think the xpac looks fun!

Actually most people are complaining about "PANDAS... Seriously Blizz???"

So... is the real issue...
that there isn't a "BIG SCARY BOSS GUY"?
that they hate the Asian aesthetic?
that they only see "Kung Fu Panda"?
that they think this will bring more kids into the game?
ALL these things?

All those other races weren't the focus of an expansion, and the more important of those races I really don't view as that joke-like. The tuskarr, murlocs, and kobolds seem fairly joke-like to me, but they've never really been that important to the game. The rest of them I just see as fairly typical fantasy/mythological creatures (well, ok, the dranei are kind of borderline). The pandaren race has always come across to me as a joke, has been connected to many jokes in the past, has never been seen in the game before, and are now the focus of an expansion. If it weren't for those four things, I would be perfectly fine with pandaren. If you got rid of the last two things I might even be fine with pandaren as a playable race. The biggest one to me is that they are making the pandas the focus of this expansion, and I simply don't like that course.

So as flame said, it isn't really the inclusion of the pandaren race that is my real problem. It is the prominence of the race that I am not liking.

No, but then again the panda exhibit still has pandas in it - they aren't out yet either.

Haters gonna hate.
I just wanted to say GOATS...IN...SPAAACE. I have no strong feelings toward the Draenei or the Pandaren one way or another.

I feel that Goblins, on the other hand, are awesome.

- Emphasis mine

1st - To you they are a joke, much like wookies are a joke to many (I laugh every time I hear a chewie imitation). If you choose to ignore the lore of the Pandaren and just call them cuddly pandas then sure, I could see that. You seem to ignore the fact that in this world Pandaren aren't a joke.

2nd - They have been in the game, from Warcraft 3 , to the paper RPG, to WoW. Yes Blizzard did the whole "Pandaren Xpress" thing as a sort of cruel joke. Teasing those of us that have wanted to see them appear in WoW. To the people that didn't play War3, it must have appeared as JUST a joke.

3rd - The expansion is taking place on the Pandaren home continent. There are going to be a lot of Pandaren there... I know rite.

I guess the expansion should have just focused on us killing random big bad guy #27 and throw in Pandaren as an afterthought with little to no explanation, people would be much happier since they wouldn't be the "focus". Hey, it worked for space goats...

*I'm not upset at anyone, just a little weary of having to explain this.

As are we. I don't mind disagreeing, but many people sound like they do not consider our point of view valid, and that's what bothers me.

I have reviewed all the facts, read all the defenses, and seen all the previews. I agree that Pandaren are not a joke race. I agree with everyone on how long they have been in the game. I'm just not excited by them. Like at all. I'm not looking forward to them being in the game (if it helps, I don't like worgen either). I'm not excited about talent tree changes, not incredibly interested in Pokemon battles, and am not much of a pvper (aside from leveling). The new monk class doesn't look appealing to me either.

These are all just my opinions. I'm not requesting that anyone agree or disagree with them! I was excited to see what Blizzard was going to do to combat the SWTOR and GW2 releases, and this just didn't do it for me.

Free Diablo 3 looks like a desperate move to me :P When did Blizzard ever have to do this before?

...and yes, if SWTOR isn't great, I'll probably be right back playing alongside you guys anyway :P

I completely understand that there is lots of lore related to the Pandaren. I'm not disputing that fact. I am putting little weight on it, however, because the most prominent information that people know about the Pandaren race is that they were involved in jokes.

I think a good example from the Star Wars universe would be races like the Jawas, Ewoks, or Gungans. Throw Wookiees in there if you like, but I still don't see how anyone could view them as primarily a joke. Funny to imitate, perhaps, but not a joke as far as the prominent examples of the characters go. Those races have plenty of very serious back story to them, but the most prominent examples that people recognize about them are more joke-like. As such, you would have many people (myself included) who would be very skeptical and disappointed if Bioware ever decided to focus an expansion on one of those races like Blizzard is doing with the Pandaren. The tone that Star Wars: The Old Republic is setting would simply not fit with focusing a full expansion on a race that most people consider to be silly. The back stories of those races can be "serious as a heart attack" and people will still be reluctant to accept it because they have a hard time thinking of those races as anything other than a joke. I think the same principle applies to the Pandaren.

When I say "in the game," I mean WoW. I'm not aware of any previous appearances by Pandaren inside World of Warcraft. I hadn't ever even heard of the paper RPG before you mentioned it, and I viewed the cameo that the Pandaren made in WC3 as a joke as well.

I guess the expansion should have just focused on us killing random big bad guy #27 and throw in Pandaren as an afterthought with little to no explanation, people would be much happier since they wouldn't be the "focus". Hey, it worked for space goats...

/agree. I'm thinking Emerald Dream. I would have been way more likely to play that expansion at some point.

I understand the sentiment. Clearly the different sides of this debate are having some trouble communicated to each other, lol. I enjoy these sorts of debate a little too much for my own good sometimes, though. :)

I also more or less agree with all this. I do still view the pandaren as... well, silly, at least. Maybe that's a better word then "joke." I'm not seeking to imply that Blizzard is playing a joke on all WoW players by adding them to the game, I'm saying that it is hard not to think of them as silly and largely focused on making people laugh - and there are a lot of people that are not interested in that being the focus of the expansion. I did like the Worgen, though.

As for the other things in that quote, I'm right with flame. The pandaren are just the primary focus of my disappointment with this expansion because the most important thing by far to me in a video game is the storyline.
