Mega Man 9

A fundamental rethinking of what makes a good game is at play here. The classic Mega Man series worked because of the specific play mechanics made possible by their technology. When the games went 16-bit, something intangible yet essential was lost -- the pace slowed, the "improved" animations interfered with the playability, the oversized sprites felt cramped on the screen and overly loose in the heat of action. The exceptional, precise feel that had defined Mega Man was compromised by the need to upgrade to Super NES standards.

My thoughts on the article and Mega Man...

Yes Mega Man 2 was the best of the series.

They didn't mention that the music is paramount to the classic Mega Man feel.

Yes some play styles simply aren't going to work as well in 3D but I have long had ideas for a good 3d version of Mega Man. Would it be the same as the original? No, but it would be excellent in it's own right.

I liked Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 OK! Shoot me if you like but I found them decent games. It did not compare to the classic feel of the original but it was good in it's own right. (the main problem was it was far to easy and short a game!).

Graphics are overrated greatly. In most games they should take all that texture/highpoly count effort and put it into things that can be more useful in gameplay. Dynamic lighting, destuctable enviroments, physics simulations and AI that is smarter than a brick. Really I cannot stress how many times artists make the same mistake, they rush to detail and ignore the basic form! Of course none of this really applies to the classic Mega Man feel it's just my opinion on proper graphics usage. With that I will say I have seen the new Bionic Commando (2D version) videos, and while you fight in 2D, the 3D effects are nice sugar candy and as long as gameplay is up to snuff it hurts nothing.

While I like Mega Man it is pretty sad that people can't come up with good new ideas and have to continually rehash old ones. It's like no developer ever asks himself would I like to play this game? Is it fun? No wait I need a focus group to tell me what this "fun" thing is .
