Media center freeware?

why wait for w7 when vista home premium can do it already?

vista can't do DTV...it can do CableCard which is an absolutely ridiculous system and you can't do a DIY build.

and apparently w7 can't do DTV now either...DTV announced that they cancelled the tuner project, but apparently Dish has one going on...so if that comes to fruition, I'll likely move to Dish.

Wiki: Windows 7.

From the Wikipedia.com article:IF I buy it, and that's a pretty big if, I hope that it can be customized similar to XP so that it can only use ~100mb of ram or less and still be functional for gaming/general usage.

A friend has XP on one of his computers using about 58mb of ram at start-up and his XP laptop, which is very similar to mine, uses about 157mb at start-up.

Vista on my laptop has been customized so that it *only* uses 384mb of ram (which is down from ~800mb of ram usage...craziness ) My laptop can only hold 2gb of ram, and initially it only had ONE gig of ram! 384mb at start-up is as good as it gets apparently :(.

If I do buy Windows 7, the upgraded media center would be nice, but definitely not one of the sole reasons for buying the OS.

I highly doubt it can go that low. During the break I plan on spinning up a spare machine with the latest build, but from all apperances within our organization, it's a significant improvement in performance. Not to mention, being able to actually customize UAC and making it a bit more intelligent is a huge bonus :)

It's a bit odd that you're running that high though - it usually takes me running a server product on a laptop to start seeing memory usage that high.

Make sure you've disabled superfetch if you haven't...with that little physical memory, it's generally a wasted service.

For that matter...post a picture of your running service list and task manager after selecting "show for all users".
