StarCraft is extremely popular in South Korea and is considered a sport. Some professional gamers there will play up to 70 games a day to practice before a big match. If you don't know much about StarCraft an average game last around 10-30 minutes.

There have been a few news articles I've read over the last year that are just sad like this one.
There was one where two parents were employee'd as farmers for an MMORPG and neglected there child to the point of death. A few years ago a boy killed his friend after he sold his online property he had lent him. If you do a google search and type "Killed over video game" you will find a lot of hits.
