Making easy money - how do you do it efficiently? Add suggestions here.

Legacy of Elijah Guild Leader
First let me say, I think there is more to GW than having shiny things, and that shiny things don't have any sort of "eliteness" about them. That said, my OCD does like to fill up my hall of monuments super full, especially since I've been playing a while and "beaten everything". Regardless on how one feels on shiny things, we all often face the issue of A) we'd like to have more cash for something in GW and B) making money in GW is usually extremely boring, and not usually associated with actually playing the game.

Hoping that actually playing the game is the goal for GW2 development. :) That said, I'll add stuff I do, and would love to hear yours. Of course, even boring things can be fun in limited doses or good company.

I believe I despise farming more than most, so would love to hear your ideas. Let's play the money making game.

Stuff I personally do, have done, or will be soon:
1) SoS farming in UW
Solo, kinda boring, yields 5 ecto an hour. Highly recommend some good music playing. Fun if you enjoy killing Aatxe and Skeletons. Can also be done in a dual setup, bit faster and more fun but definitely less profitable.
2) Speed clears
Right now I'm just doing FoW, but I can't believe I actually enjoy it. Doesn't feel as farmy, or maybe it's the social aspect. These all take something up front, usually a little bit of learning outside of the comfort zone, but I think they're worth it and fun from what I've seen.
---- Fissure of Woe SC ----
Figure 15 mins waiting for a group, 30 mins to clear HM. Usually get ~4 shards on my T1 route and about half a dozen golds between chests, enemies, and end chest.
---- Underworld SC ----
I haven't started this yet, but plan to soon. Will report back on profit/fun/drama levels. This one is harder to get into due to needing a bunch of ghastly stones to get into a good group, and need to finish a bunch unless you buy them.
---- DoA speed clear ----
These are fun and easy, or hard/coordinated and more profitable. Glaiveway takes ~1:30 to clear with a good PUG. I've done that and found it fun. Trenchway can be done in under 30 minutes (!!!!!). I'd say a good glaive group can make 30k/hour overall, which isn't bad for a team sport.
3) Passively buying cons
Detailed here. Easily makes about 45 plat per hour in an alt window while playing, but requires 1) money 2) skill points 3) a second account. The huge quest XP from FoWSC has been helping fuel this one for me. :)
4) Holilday Events.
There's often an insane amount of cash to be made at events, and the upside is the quests are new, and limited time. So, it's kinda fun to grind out.
---- Snowball Dominance (Wintersday) ----
Obscene amounts of cash to be made on this quickly repeatable quest. I would estimate I made about 100k/hour worth of drunk/party/sweet points, but I was also using a dual-instance setup with a ranger and necro. Friend's necro mule has ~250k ebon. I heard Raven got legendary survivor on her mule, hahaha.
---- Mobstoppers (Halloween) ----
Long story short, you continue to accept/drop a quest, and get stacks. Use them to capture skeletons of dhuum in the underworld throughout the year (you were going there anyway, right?). Make fat, fat cash next halloween. How much cash? Well, I grabbed 6 stacks (1500 mobstoppers). For every 3 mobstoppers, you get 10k xp, 1 plat, and 25 trick or treat bags. I've been doing this passively while soloing with SoS, doing UW runs with you guys, and will be doing UWSC. When I turn in my stacks this October, I stand to make:
500 platinum, 50 ToT stacks (worth ~35k ea), and 5 million xp - good for ~4 instant legendary survivors and 333 skill points - good for ~200 plat worth of cons profit. Wizard (one I got this idea from, among others) picked up 30 stacks. No way he's gonna farm that though...go Wizard go!
5. Power buying/selling
Let me first say I HATE buying/selling. It's annoying, and I am not patient. That said, this is just one more reason to have an alternate account. Play windowed, put your WTB/WTS out there, and simply wait for a PM while you play in your main window. Easy as pie.

Also, there are some very predictable patterns in guildwars. ToTs WILL BE cheap during halloween. The items in them WILL sell for a lot more just a few months later. I bought a bunch during halloween @ 25k each, and made 40% more just a few months later. Want to really get the most of your money? Do something like this: buy event items in bulk, like ToTs. Wait, and sell more before Wintersday. Buy Wintersday gifts. Wait, and sell those points a few months later. Essentially you are getting very predictable, very high compound interest. One could easily double one's money every 6 months with this method.

Again, lots of different ways to do it, but the best tip I can give is use that second account to change a miserable thing into something you don't mind doing.
6. Gifts of the Traveler
Easy way to make quick, passive money each week. I can tell you it IS more profitable to sell your gifts than open. I wait till I have a bunch and sell all at once to reduce time. Nice having alt proph accounts and an assassin that can run anywhere, because on proph weeks I usually buy items cheap (usually less than half the price gifts sell for), and snag 25 gifts for a quick 50+ plat profit. Easy money.
7. SAVING money
This one could almost use it's own thread (maybe it should?) but I'll just say that often there are many different routes of achieving something in GW, and some are more expensive than others. Of course, saving money and then using it to make money is another reason to do this. We all have limited supplies of cash, some more limited than others.

I'll try to think of some more, but figure this should be more than enough to get people started. I'd love to hear others' ideas on how you make money efficiently or answer any questions on these, because farming just isn't usually that fun and I'd love to have people spending more time actually playing.

I will HIGHLY recommend #7. The trick to making money in GW is simply not to spend it on every shiny that comes along. I see kids everyday begging for stuff in alliance chat and on gwauctions. I once posted a nice axe on the auction site for 20k. Someone bought it and asked me to hold it for a week because he didn't have 20k and needed time to raise the money. IF YOU DON'T HAVE 20K, DON'T BUY A 20K WEAPON!!!!!! You don't need it! There are plenty of weapons for sale that are much much cheaper or even FREE!

Take an hour of your time and write down everything in gw that you want to buy. Everything! Weapons, minipets, Elite armor, simple max armor, cap signets, tomes, keys, consumables, ectos, rare shiny stuff. Go into detail. Do you want 30 more minipets for your HoM (any mini) or do you want a specific pet? Which weapons? Koss needs a new Axe. Tahlkora has been begging for a 20/20 protection scepter. Keiran wants a new spear and shield set and your brand new farming sin wants a nice set of Zealous daggers.

Now that you have your list, write down what each item will reasonably cost you and where can you get it for the least amount of money. Minipets can be found very cheap if you're willing to wait and not too picky about which ones you get. Most weapons with the correct stats can be had from collectors for a few trinkets if you don't care about the skin. Consumables can be farmed. Skills can be capped. Don't waste money on a tome when with a little effort you can cap it yourself.

Add up what your list will cost you and prioritize it.

Then start saving. If it isn't on your list, don't buy it. There is very little in gw that you have to have. I'd say that you have to have the basic essentials. An Id Kit, salvage kit, max armor, a decent weapon, runes and enough skills to run a viable build. I think all that can be had for less than 20k. All else is optional.

I'm a millionaire several times over in GW. I don't farm. I don't powertrade. It can be done.

To add to what Raven said on saving money - use auctions. If you'll notice her sig, she's bought/sold a total of 555 items through GW Auctions. That means it's saved her the misery of sitting in town, spamming, haggling with potential buyers, etc 555 times. You can also usually find great deals on auction sites, and set the lowest price you're willing to accept.

Also, for saving money, it helps to know the range of what things go for:
http://argos-soft.net/GwEstimator/

Search for what you are interesting in buying, and let Kamadan AD1 chat give you an idea. This goes down sometimes at the end of the month when (presumably) their bandwidth runs out, and I always miss it when it does.

Definitely number 7. I lack the extra account, skills, and mindset for the others, but as been said before, pick up everything you can, sell or salvage it all, the money adds up. It especially irks me to hear people beg in the 5 g to 1k g range. You can make that in less than an hour in nm just doing quests and beating up stuff. I am by no means rich, but I don't suffer from perpetual broke either, just as Raven says, set a goal and save toward it. I will also say try GW Auction, I have made quit a bit just from using that every now and again. Just save yer gold.

I'd echo what Ursan suggested: pick up EVERYTHING you get, especially in the higher-end areas or Hard Mode, ID everything, and aside from the more popular skins/maxxed mods, merch the items. ID'ing a white over ~25g in value prior to the ID will add more to the value than it costs in the actual ID Kit purchased. Whites near 50g will often come close to doubling in value, and full inventories of ID'd whites adds up quick

Also, running Glint's Challenge is a great source of income. Completion will gain you a Cloth of the Brotherhood to either upgrade an EOTN hero or sell to someone for ~10k in Kamadan. A hero/hench run usually takes me about 20 minutes to complete with little pain, though there is a learning curve just like any area you come across.

Farming sucks, but it has been the most profitable for me. I did the St. Patrick's day... err week, farm on Spectral Vaettir. Get some Norn points, Mesmer Tomes, lots of gold weapons, and a tone of holiday items.

I took some advice from Ryan and tried Conset selling and made a ton. I suggest if you got some money and some time give that a shot. It will def. pay off.

Takes money to make money sometimes...good ol' GW, where the rich get richer, and the poor stay poor. It's all because of Adelburn's policies.

Forgot to mention one other thing for starting Proph characters. Save some money on buying skills, several of the secondary quests have skills as part of the reward. Some are so-so, but some are highly useful such as Air Attunement and Water Attunement. Check the wiki before you buy a skill, maybe you can get it as a freebie. Also if you are title chasing for Treasure Hunter, Wisdom, and Lucky track all at once you will need lock picks, LOTS of lock picks, and EOTN only lock picks can be used for chests. Think about buying them in bulk from another player. I am consistently buying them in the 1200 - 1250 ea price range. Now figure that the merchant sells for 1500 ea, since I started buying picks in bulk I have bought over 300 picks. That is a 75,000 gold difference, or one Norn armour set, with change left over. In game economics mirrors real life economics, if ya ain't got cash take an Econ 101 class it will get clearer.

I also like applying econ to GW. The best part of GW is that it's much easier to predict. Big derv update coming in a few months? By elite derv tomes, sell after. Holiday event? Buy up goodies like mad, sell later. I crafted all my destroyer weps for ~25k because it was obvious prices would spike one day with GW2 news.

Speaking of predictable things on GW2 news - I'm expecting unobtainable minis to skyrocket soon. Varesh used to be unded for 15k, I bought one last night for 70k. I expect that right now people are trying to get to 50 minis and filling HoM, so they don't bother paying 70k for any individual one.

I suspect that as GW2 draws near, many more people will be trying to convert their ecto and voltaic spears/bone dragon staves into minis. Minis are the only monument that you can't just fill yourself at will. I can farm a torment or oppressor weapon, buy armor, etc. I can't just pull a 4th year gold out of nowhere.

So, if you think you ever might want a Varesh, Celestial pet of some sort, mini destroyer, zippy, etc...do yourself a favor and by now at the inflated price before it goes insane upon GW2 news...because I expect the demand for limited minis to greatly outweigh the supply soon.

Edit to add: I will add that I do not expect a huge impact on those simply looking to get 50 or less minipets. There are just too many minis out there, we'll have 6 year birthdays soon, and you dont' even need many 4th any 5th years to hit 50.

I find that with the new Zaishen vanquishes many players don't pick up items once an area is completed. There's money in white items players leave behind. I also do this to salvage items for consets. I made gold via auctions, selling saphs & rubies, and a certain mini-celestial pig :) I'm sitting on many consets right now and have yet to sell them.
