Magicka (aka: c'mere lemme heal you with my warhammer)

Anyone else got this game? I bought it when it came out yesterday solely based on the article on an article on kotaku. I quickly convinced three other friends to buy it, and promptly jumped into 4 player co-op, using a skype conference call for communication...

...And proceeded to have one of the most hilariously chaotic gaming sessions in our history of playing videogames. There was yelling, laughing and tears (of laughter) as we slowly learned what did what -usually at the cost of friendly fire killing someone off (except in the case of the Healing Mines, but that was a special case).

It is a game that doesn't take itself seriously, and is definitely not for the extremely competitive player (I could see people getting mad because of teammates goofing off/making mistakes). I dunno what it would be like solo, and I'm not even sure why someone would want to play it that way. 4 player co-op with voice communication is definitely the way to go.

And one of the best parts about the game: It's only $10 on steam.

Note: For those who don't know Paradox games, they are notoriously buggy on immediate release, and tend to be patched to perfection over the course of a couple weeks. Magicka had some issues yesterday, but thanks to a 500mb patch, we didn't have any issues today and this is one of the smoothest releases I've seen from them.

Played the demo last night, thought it was incredibly challenging but very satisfying. I can not imagine right now how it would be in co-op especially 4!

That kotaku article made me want to buy it right out as well.

I enjoyed the demo quite a bit, the game seems like it would make for hilarious co-op situations. Probably going to pick it up as soon as I have the chance.

That article definitely got me interested as well. It actually originated from Rock Paper Shotgun, which for anyone who doesn't already read it is one of the best PC gaming blogs around.

I'll definitely be watching for Magicka during the next Steam sale. That is, if I haven't already purchased Torchlight II. And if there's not already a PS3 version.

Of course, I may change my mind after playing the demo (which I downloaded 2 nights ago but still haven't played).

One word:

M60.

BWHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Also, a ridiculous number of hilarious references (star trek, rambo, monty python, highlander...)

I just bought this and can definitely say it's hilarious. Having only played single player I can definitely see why multiplayer would be alot of friendly fire deaths, but that's easy to overcome with a nice easy revive spell. Anybody who loves a fun coop time should definitely pick this up. At $10 its a great value.

Magicka is on sale for $4.99 on Steam today. Or you can buy Magicka plus the Vietnam expansion (yes, the Vietnam expansion for Magicka is a real thing) for $7.99.

I thought about picking it up, but decided to pass on it. My track record for being able to find people to play non-Valve multiplayer Steam games with is, well, abysmal. FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage, Killing Floor, Monday Night Combat, Serious Sam HD, Zero Gear, Madballs in...Babo: Invasion--all games I either received as a gift or bought during a sale then quickly had trouble finding anyone else who played the game.

I played the Magicka demo and enjoyed it (well, mostly; save points were few and far between and there were plenty of bugs), but I'm guessing it would turn into another "flash in the pan" PC multiplayer game the moment I paid money for it. :(
