So, who is gonna be in my Fellowship from Day One? :D

Edit: If anyone is in the Seattle area (like me), both this game and the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons MMORPG will be shown at Penny Arcade Expo 2005 on August 26-28 in Bellevue. You'll get a complete write-up from me regarding these two highly anticipated MMO games and anything else they show.

Not sure. This is definitely one that I will pay for no matter what, though. I've been watching some of the movies and they are gorgeous. Really does look like Middle-earth should.

Here is the official site. You can sign up for the newsletter and they'll alert you when Beta becomes available. I'm going to do my best to get onboard for that.

The more interest I can create now the better.

I've got five months to get enough of you committed to play so that we can have a ToJ "Kinship" from the start (which I gladly will volunteer to lead.. hehe). ;)

I've had my eye on this one for a long time.

Sadly, I'm not sure how I'd manage my time between LOTR, my online Madden league (11-1 last season, then shut out in the playoffs  ), helping lead the GW chapter, plus real life resonsibilities. I quit FFXI because it was taking up too much of my time, and it looks like LOTR will be another huge timesink. A very enjoyable one, but a timesink nonetheless.

In other words, I'll check it out during Beta (assuming it's free).

I hear ya. My sports dynasties are all offline so I can pick those up and play them as I need to. But I'm not going to ever quit Guild Wars, so this would definitely be a timesink for me, as well. Problem is, LotR is my favorite fantasy-themed world. I'm even focusing my LEGO building on a LotR theme, and trying my hand at build the Meduseld (the Golden Hall of Rohan).

I'll find a way. I will, I will, I will.

I will see how much the monthly fee is, and then see, i realllyyy loovvee lotr tho, its like the altime best movie. So, i will see how much the fee is, if its not too much, i might get it.

I immediately dismiss playing all MMO games that cost money, but I'll likely sign up for the LotR beta. I'm disturbed that the developers might look to the movie rather than the books for source material.

If the developers fail to mention The Silmarillion, then don't expect the game to be an accurate representation of Middle Earth.

I was reading A LOT about this game today. Something I read on the game's forums (where they have weekly developer diaries) is that they have one develepor on staff whose sole job is to research Tolkien lore. I think that they'll stick to the literature as much as possible.

From one of the devs:

Give players a world worth role-playing in. Make a Middle-earth that is attractive and interesting to role-players. We are working to make the world rich, weaving the lore of Middle-earth throughout the game, so that players are willing to invest themselves more fully into the game experience. An accurate Middle-earth is a big step in that direction, and accuracy in depicting the world is our priority in building the environment of the game. The Ivy Bush pub will be on the Bywater Road; Athelas plants will have long leaves; the hobbit holes of Bree are higher up the hill, above the houses of the men below: every detail will be as accurate as we can make them, and things that are unmentioned in the books will be made to fit the feel of Middle-earth as best we can.

Graphics cannot make a bad game into a good game, but they can help create an immersive environment, and we're striving for a deep, convincing representation of Middle-earth: from the farms of the Shire to the underground cities of the Dwarves, everything is being built and polished and detailed all with the ultimate goal of creating a Middle-earth to meet the scrutiny of fans of the books for years to come.

Bah. I wish I'd known about that job when they were taking applications. :(

EDIT: It's a pity that Peter Jackson had no such concerns.

Copied from this post on the official forums, here is some hands on feedback from someone who saw the game and talked to the developers over the weekend at an event in Rhode Island. This is the kind of info I hope to expand on when the game is shown at PAX in a couple of weeks.

Ok, I have some time this morning before my unfortunate, but necessary departure from Rhode Island (someone has to start collecting next year's door prizes, ya know), so I thought I would get my LOTROG 1 thoughts out of the way, and briefly mention some of the literal BOMBS that were dropped this weekend. Please see the Community forum for more on my thanks to everyone involved that helped make the gathering great. I will now list, in order of damage radius, the bombs I heard at LOTROG 1. Note, there is likely to be complete footage of this information forthcoming from the excellent A/V tech crew from LOTROSource, so stay tuned.

20 Megaton Nuke: For those of us wishing to enter the world and be able to experience it without the combat grind, combatcentric mindset, and combat-necessary involvement--Turbine has listened, and we were told there would be something for you in this world.

15 Megaton Nuke: The old timeline is GONE. The game will now begin somewhere around the time Frodo left Bag End...either before or just after.

10 Megaton Nuke: The old endurance system is GONE. During involved gameplay, the team noted that this system, while a very good idea in it's origin, just did not effectively maintain fun gameplay in it's implementation. Working to reduce the complexity of combat information processing (I assume to maintain a wide open door for player hand's-on combat action), they decided the endurance system was just too onerous. It is being worked on to become more streamlined to allow players to keep their attention on more important and complex combat elements.

5 Megaton Nuke: PvP has been elevated from the bottomless pits of Moria to a new level of consideration. While the statement was made that there will still not be direct Player vs. Player in the sense of using your character to attack another, they definitely made hint that something is being developed to interest the vocal PvP community.

*Note from Missile Command -- If you wish to discuss PvP and this new implication, please honor Patience's dedicated topic in this matter and add to that discussion -- or you will have your thread nuked by something far larger than any megatonnage offered here*

1 Megaton Nuke: The E3 Demo, our most current look at the game, was chuckled at by most of the Turbine team. Why? Because it was so OLD, compared to what they are playing now.

*LoA peers into the dark NDA wall, and sees a tiny light-hole. Moments before it is plugged up by a rather surly looking orc in a Turbine 3-piece suit, the following was gleamed:*

The current play-build (used by the team for playdays) is play-build 4. The E3 demo was play-build 1. The graphics, fluidity of ALL movements (both mundane, as well as combat), are so impressive, that their OWN technical expert felt like he was playing a game INSIDE A MOVIE

1,000 Pounder: Combat is absolutely awesome. No, seriously. The E3 demo is a joke compared to current combat. Most, if not all of what we saw has been improved, modified, advanced, and ultimately better polished. [in other words, I believe they LISTENED to our concerns for some of the combat issues]. I consider myself a very good judge of BS vs. straight-on discussion. There are certain mannerisms people have when they are simply trying to impress, and when they are leveling with you. Analyzing much of what was said in intimate discussions, I can tell you this. Noone was there to impress. These guys have a game mechanic in development that will make everything out there pale.

500 Pounder: There is currently no "system" of transportation when your character is defeated. Rather than tackle somewhat ludicrous lore problems of always seeing "A band of Rangers rescues your body and brings you back to town" (the example being this would look silly in the depths of Moria), they decided to utilize Tolkien's own methodology, and allow players to imagine a fitting setting in which any particular defeat would be met with your character's rescue. (My take on this is, if you are in Moria, a wondering band of adventurers happened upon you, and returned you to the surface, if outside Rivendell, an elven warband, ect.) Currently, the point if return will be an as yet to be determined nearby camp, or resting point.

Mortar round: No Horses will be in the initial release. They are still planning release of mounts and all-things-horses in a future expansion that deals with Rohan.

Hand Grenade: The creative possibilities since purchasing the license from Vivendi have improved considerably.

Molotov Cocktail: This Wednesday is the next official Turbine play-day. Perhaps we can entice them to give some feedback.

Black Cat firecracker: It appears that the dwarf remains the preferred race to play...and it also appears that in close-combat these stumpy bad-boyz are gonna rock!

I'm sure I've left some things out....and we have instructed everyone that attended to flood the forums with their own impressions and insights (let's remember, there were devs sitting at almost every table during the luncheon, a 4 hours affair).

One final note. Rhode Island was a frickin' steambath. I didn't haul my keester half-way across the country to get the same helping of swelter as I have in Texas. If I go up there again, I expect all the fansite sponsors to properly pay for some good weather. Afterall, you ARE the organized sponsorship here...rather shoddy work, I'd say.

I used to hang out at the official forums waaaaaay back in early development. I have not visited there in quite some time as other interests took over. In this type of mmorpg I want a lot of crafting/tradeskills/etc and at that time in development they seemed a bit scarce on what would really be in the game. I would love to play a hobbit baker/cook, but haven't been back to the site to see if that is even possible now.

*waited til got home to log into their forum...last time I logged in was 6/2/04! :p And still nothing definite on professions and such!!

Talori, I think the above quote pertains to what you're looking for. Hopefully they will have plenty for those just wanting to "live" in Middle-earth but not necessarily try and save it over and over and over again.

I've just found out that two of the actual game developers are going to spend some time with a group of us posters from their official forums on the Saturday night of the convention. This means I get to meet them and ask them questions... one on one and not with hundreds of fans around. I'm extremely excited as these are the people that spend everyday of their life creating the world and game experience that I plan to become totally engrossed in. That is, eventually, once it finally comes out.

It is just that so many mmorpgs have tradeskills that are like added in and have no real purpose... looted items are better than crafted, food isn't necessary, etc. Then there are those that have the tradeskills, but they are so bugged all the time that they are worthless (ie SWG for the first several months!) Although A Tale in the Desert came close, it just was too much work.

So far the only promising mmorpg in development that caters to people like me is Adellion. They already know my desire to be a cook, and they are working hard to make sure I have a fun cooking experience - unlike real life :p

No updates news to report right now as Turbine is gearing up for PAX this weekend. I'm sure I'll tons of info after seeing the demo and meeting with the devs, though.

Now that this thread has been moved for more exposure, I'd again like to know of anyone who is mostly certain that they will play LotRO when it comes out (hopefully sometime next year). I am already looking into the creation of a kinship and will need people interested in this game to ever have it added to ToJ.
