Looking for Online Shooter...

Hey, everybody! I hope you're all having a great time with all the new stuff this weekend. Last night was really fun for me, personally, cause I made a Ranger/Assassin AND I finally got teamspeak working (thanks, Tek).

ANYWAY, that's all quite beside the point. As the title suggests, I'm currently in the market for an online shooter to get in to. (Because Guild Wars doesn't take up enough of my time? whatev...) So I figured, you're all upstanding, trustable folks, why not ask you? So I am.

So far, I've kinda looked at Call of Duty 2, I am, right now, downloading the demo to Rainbow Six 4 (though I'd rather like to know when that's going to be released), and I'm looking into Ghost Recon also. What I'm most interested in is Battlefield 2. Yesterday, I was one look away from impulse-buying it at Best Buy, but I saw the requirements. I downloaded its demo yesterday just to see if my computer could take it, and it worked fine.

What I really want is something that requires strategy, planning and that sort of thing. (Not unlike Guild Wars when you get into it.) Yesterday, playing BF2, it seemed like the big maps (and indeed the entire game) were made for strategy, but (perhaps because it was on a demo server and no one really cared) there was no thought to the battles at all.

Anyway, I'm not buying anything yet, so let me know what you all think. I know several of you play BF2 and quite likely several others. See ya!

neg, go get counter-strike.... ive played that game for years. its sweet
 
shooter's and strategy really don't have anything to do with one another. Of course your requirements are rather vague.

What type of shooter are you interested in?

And the only reason is that one has blood and the other doesn't and you can turn it off in CS!

also cs was associated with HL which does have an "M" rating therefor by association has been rated that way. i truely dislike esrb...
 
What I mean by "strategy" is that we've got these headsets here... but no one uses them except to say "n00b" or "pwned" out loud instead of typing it. Playing more of BF2, I think that if you really get into it, you can't just run around aimlessly trying to kill everyone you see.

The game is set up to where massive organization of your team is required to be really freakin' good. That's kinda what I mean. I suppose more organization than strategy. I'd like to hear from some of you who are in an active clan in the game what your thoughts about it are.

any team-based shooter should be utilizing that, and most FPS's have team style game plays, so it's just a matter of taking your pick. A short selection:

Half-Life and it's various mods (CS, DoD, NS)
Unreal Tournament
Battlefield
BattleFront
Gunz (Free!)
 
I definitely recommend BF2. When there are a few of us online together and we group up in our own squad, we usually do extremely well. There's no substitute for having a full squad all on teamspeak. It almost makes your side invincible.

What are your system specs?
 
My only problem is with the video card. I think the box said 128mb? Mine's a 32mb. Everything else is way above, and it seems to work extremely well provided I have the graphics on their lowest (I don't mind). I wasn't glitching or lagging at all until I had a bit of a connection issue. Hopefully this demo is not deceiving me...

I think when you really get down to it, "shooters" aren't going to require nearly as much thought as a game like GW. For the most part, as much as they will seem to be based around team strategy, there is still just an element of fun shooting and blowing stuff up-ness.

Here's my general listing of the games I've played and how much thought is required (on a scale of 1 to 10)

1) Counter-Strike (8)
2) Call of Duty (5-6)
3) Battlefield 2 (7)
4) Unreal Tournament (1 if you're playing deathmatch, 8 if you're playing onslaught)
5) FEAR and Quake 4 (2-3)

I guess it really depends on how much fun you want to have. If it's fun for you to have to think a lot during combat, then go for it. Personally, I like Call of Duty because it sort of balances out the fun-to-thought ratio. I don't want to just run around killing whatever I see, like in Unreal Tournament or Quake, but I don't want to have to necessarily plan out escape routes or strategies before just going into the fray. It's really up to you. All of the games I listed above are fun to someone...
 
Okay, thanks. Yeah, I'm probably 90% strategy. I LOVED the Rainbow Six games until they've kinda strayed away from their roots. You could say I prefer Chess over Poker. Thinking 5 steps ahead of the game and being able to show true honor and leadership even in the context of a video game when things go wrong and plans have to change immediately.

For example, on the Gulf of Oman level which is on the demo, the Americans are given transport helicopters from their Carrier. Now, the Quake or Halo player would just simply take that and try to do as much damage with it as possible before getting shot down, but my idea would be to sneak a strike team (cause you can fit 7 soldiers in the thing) and flank the enemy or capture one of their spawn points. Then you can have the US soldiers spawn at that point and the MEC would be surrounded.

No one in that demo (probably because it was a demo) used that chopper for anything but a flying gun EVEN when the only point we had left was the carrier!

Anyway, you kinda see where I'm getting at and maybe I'm just thinking to idealistically, but I always prefer smarts over mindless shooting. See ya!

SW: Battefront 2 lets you do the "everyone pile in and flank, capture, etc."

but that's a strict "star wars lover" thing ah think
 
Americas Army has a hard price to beat.......its totally free. Its also a lot of fun. Halonic was up to 34 Honor points when Guild Wars came out. For military realism its hard to beat.
 
Alright, it's over... I was at Best Buy today, and I couldn't help it. I know officially own and play Battlefield 2. So much for restraint... It's wicked fun though. See ya!

WOW, 32MB? I can't imagine you playing the game at all with a video card with only 32MB of memory. That would suggest that it's a DirectX 8 card also. I honestly don't know how it is even running on that video card. You definitely have me curious about your system specs.
