Linksys keeps loosing connection, HELP

Okay it has only done it twice in two days, mainly once each day, but I am wondering if this is common or if there is something I can do to prevent this. I haven't tweaked anything yet on the router, so if I need to let me know. :) Thanks! Sry but I am not the most techniqual literat as I would like.

Change the frequency from the default 6 to something diff like 2 or 11. Maybe it is conflicting with a cordless phone or something in the house.

I second the motion to install DD-WRT if you are "techy" enough to handle that.

if it keeps losing connection... find it ;). Glad i could help Logos! :p

depending on the version, i would not install DD-WRT, the v7 and up are still pretty buggy and can brick it

need more informaiton. What model linksys? When you loose connection watch the front..is it restarting? Have you ever updated the firmware? If not install the latest firmware. Is anyone using bittorrent? Many linksys routers do not like bit torrent. If your router is wireless check and make sure your cordless phone are not in the 2.4 range. If they are you will have continuous issues until you replace the phones as they are interfering with each other.

When the router restarts, the Power light will blink several times then stay solid once restarted.

If your router is a wireless model, click here to skip directly to the relevant Linksys Downloads page.

I strongly advise against updating your firmware to DD-WRT v24 RC6.1 as I nearly bricked my router by updating to that version. I was able to send the DD-WRT v23 SP2 firmware via TFTP and recovered the router, but it still cost me 3 hours to fix my mistake.

When DD-WRT announces a stable release version of v24, I plan on upgrading then--and only then. Release candidates and betas are fine for software, but not a good idea for firmware that gets installed on $60 routers (I run a WRT54GL).

Oh, and speaking of model numbers, check your router model and version number before even attempting to upload the DD-WRT firmware to your router. If I remember correctly, later versions of the WRT54G/S routers don't play nicely with DD-WRT firmware.

See this uTorrent FAQ answer for more information.

I use uTorrent version 1.6.1.0 and have my router configured according to the instructions quoted below:
* The following instructions are for DD-WRT v23 or later only.
* Enter the following values at 'Web-Admin -> Administration -> Management -> IP Filter Settings'
* Maximum Ports: 4096
* TCP Timeout (s): 300 (decrease if you have many TCP connections)
* UDP Timeout (s): 300 (decrease if you have many UDP connections)
* Save Settings and then Reboot Router
On a related note, I strongly advise against running any version of uTorrent higher than 1.6.1.0 as the developers crawled into bed with the MPAA after 1.6, so later versions may not be safe.
If your router is wireless check and make sure your cordless phone are not in the 2.4 range. If they are you will have continuous issues until you replace the phones as they are interfering with each other.
I had a problem where I was unable to connect and stay connected to my wireless router, which was only 5 feet away. I changed my broadcast channel from 6 to 11 and it worked fine after that.

Tech illiterate

Hey guys thanks for the advice, I think the main issue is the channel since all we have is cell phones. So being that I am not as tech savy with a router, How would I go about changing the channel??? :) Srry for being so "illiterate" here. :)

Thanks again though guys for all the help!

P.S. it disconnected once again on my wife. It is the connection directly into the cable outlet itself and not a device just to clarify, so it is the main connection that it seems to loose once daily for some strange reason. Everything stays connected once the net is back up.

cell phones operate on a different frequency range and not in the wifi 2.4 ghz range. Get the manual form linksys.com it will point you in the right way..:)

You may want to run a constant ping to the router to isolate the source of the issue. It's possible that the cable modem is "burping" from time to time or that your Internet service provider hiccups now and then.

To run a constant ping to the router:
  • Click the Windows Start button
  • Click Run
  • Type cmd in the Run window
  • Click OK or press Enter
  • Type ping 192.168.1.1 -t (where 192.168.1.1 is the IP address of your router)
  • Press Enter
When the connection drops, switch immediately to the window running the constant ping. If the ping request reports "Request timed out," then the router is the issue. If the ping request reports a response, then the issue is likely with your cable modem or ISP.
