laptop help

ok i just got my dads old laptop a compaq m700 with a pen 3 1 ghz 572 ram
im veen trying to load windows on but it keeps saying windows/system32/config/system folder is missing.. i when to recovery consal and typed in chkdsk /r and it keeps freexing at 50% and i know it takes a long time but it should take 5+ hrs stuck at 50% and i also tryed installing slack lunix i got it loaded and when i was abowt to log on it says root missing or something
so aney help would be nice.

iv wiped eveything and made new partisens

Does it work? Reformatting worked when we upgraded the compy we just got rid of when we upped it from Win. 95 (ugh...) to Windows 98 or 2000 or something.

it workes thank the load all i did was prey to the holy father and now it workes perfict
